#LW ghost key hassle
7 messages in this thread
Mr. Mooose,
I have a true-to-life technical question (refreshing, huh?). Anyhoo,
When using Lightwave, I animated an object to begin behind the camera and
slide out and twist into the picture (much like the intro letters on the
"Revolution" tape).
But, since my letters were some distance behind the camera at the
beginning, I had several blank frames at the beginning of the animation
before the letters appeared in the picture.
So, I moved my letter-object up closer to the camera and reset the new
position as a key frame. BUT, when previewing, the object first moved back
towards it's first key position before moving forward into the picture. It
was as if it "rembered" where it was before even though the key positions
were different. How come? How can I make it stop? I really don't want to
have to write my key positions on paper and start over.
Any suggestions?

I think you need to go to the first frame and reset the positions
or tell the system to start rendering at the frame you currently have as
the first requested frame.
I will pass this onto the main office and expect to get a response
before the end of the week. [My LightWave3D use has been limited]

You aren't the only one. Frustrating Problem. I'm still trying to find a
way to erase the silly thing.

–pt–not seattle– 😉
Excuse me for jumping in, but I had a similar problem, as it turned out I
had forgotten to delete the original key frame by replacing it with one
with the same frame number. Hope this helps.

The first key/frame I use in the animation is #1. When I loaded the
objects they of course began at 0,0,0 in frame 0. I left them there and
moved them to the right positions in frame #1 and created a key for
everything, since frame #1 is the first one renderable. When I modified the
beginning positions (moved them forward), I simply re-created the key for
everything at frame #1 (meaning I did not first delete all keys at #1 and
then recreate them at #1). But in frames 2 through 16 the objects move
backward toward their original positions before moving forward again. There
are no inappropriate or stray key frames; the objects somply don not move
from key position #1 to key position #2 (at frame 30) without wandering
around.

Steve, did you try saving the scene before you rendered the preview again?
Yeah, I previewed at the first set of keys, made the changes, previewed
again (and watched 20 frames of nothing as the objects went the wrong way
behind the camera). I looked at it from another viewpoint and figured out
what was going on, deleted and reset the keys (no change), finally saved
the scene, cleared the scene, reloaded the scene, and re-previewed–same
wrong movement.
This problem has occurred many times before–I once had the camera
spiral in towards a desktop ending with a close up of a can, but the camera
panned the wrong way (looking away from the desk). So, I added a ket frame
halfway along the path pointing in the right direction, but the preview
just spun the camera away from the desk twice. It just somehow "rembered"
it was pointing away last time, even thogh the the existing keys shouldn't
let it happen that way.
