I've already requested information for returning the package. I'll play
with it a little longer tonight. Not sure that I'll change my mind. For
less than half the price, the Grolier's seems to be the way to go.

Your experience parallels what I learned about the Compton's in CD-ROM
Professional (Vol. 4 No. 4; July 1991). The review says that Compton's is
*very* touchy about its enviornment. A computer has to be configured >Just
So<…and after it's configured, it might not be able to run any other
software.
I think Compton's is just too touchy. Send it back. For the same money you
could but THREE copies of Grolier's Academic American!

Re: Grolier's. I initially got a copy of Grolier's under the Software
Toolworks label. The version I got was NOT MM. I then ordered the MM
version from BEP. It was packaged in an entirely different manner and
there was no mention of Software Toolworks. I was told that this was the
latest and greatest. It surpasses the one originally shipped. Decent,
though businesslike, interface. Pictures and stereo sound. No animation
as far as I can tell. But for $300, it's definitely the way to go. Again,
watch out for multi versions with the same title.
If they ever call me back from Britannica, Compton's is on its way home.
If they don't call — I guess I'll just have to stop payment on my credit
card and keep the disc. Oh, well…
