I am under the impression that we will first need the filesystem for photo
cd as it is not ISO 9660. The guy at Hypermedia thought that the guys at
Canada Replica Systems (makers of CDROM-FS) were updating to read photo-cd,
but you know how these speculations go. I did hear of a Mac being able to
import the photos from the cd into a paint app so perhaps the images are
stored as PICT?

No, the images are NOT stored as PICT. They are a completely new system
devised by Kodak for storing images. Before all the ranting and raving
starts, I should point out that they are claiming photographic quality at
a 2048×3072 pixel size with apparent 24-bit quality and getting it all in
only around 5meg of space.

Sounds like they are of a high enough res to reproduce back to photos with
decent quality. What about the file system of the disk itself? 9660?

I dunno. I'll take a gander thru the docs we have and see if they say.
I was just reading about the Photo CD setup (probably in "Computer
Pictures") and they take an interesting approach to the
speed/accessibility/filesize approach. Apparently they actually store 5
(right FIVE!) copies of each image on the CD, as follows (approximately,
since I'm winging it from memory): 1) 128×192 for the 'postage stamp'
index, 2) somewhere around 300×400 (remember I'm winging it), 3) around
600×800 (all of these uncompressed), 4) around 1000×1500, and 5) 2000×3000
(the latter two compressed). The article said that the people using the
system were quite impressed at the quality up to 8×10 size, but it showed
visible digitizing effects when printed at poster size. The real raves were
about Kodak 's work in vastly speeding up the digitization speed for
comparable quality curve. I'll bring the article home tomorrow and post
some other comments.

No the Photo CD's are Definitely a Propreitary format BUT Kodak is supposed
to be releasing a PD reader for IBM/Clones and MACS
