I reserached the cost problem extensively and found a low cost solution,
the BCD-5000 single frame animation controller which controls both parallel
and serial decks, I then found ancient SONY SLO-383 Betamax industrial
decks for about $100 each and they work great, even have Y/C 688 dub out.
Bottom fishing, I know, but singleframe at less than $2,000 is still a
deal! The SLO-383 (plus other 3xx Betamax decks) were mfg with the 33 pin
SONY control port (same as the 3/4" 5850 and an option on the 9850 SP
deck). Look around, 383's are still out there!
Randy, thank you, the BCD-5000 and SONY SLO-383 sounds like just the sort
of thing we are looking for…by selling everything we own and throwing in
my nephew, we can probably gather together about $2000.
You say "Look around, 383's are still out there!" How about a hint or
two for some rank novices about _where_ to look? None in the basement,
garage-sale season is just about over, and I'm sure I haven't seen one
advertised in the local paper.

I see Sony 2860 3/4" decks that are supposed to be frame accurate
in my local "recycler" paper all the time. They run about $500 but
I got one for $300. Just got it tuned up and Im dieing to try it out
but I think I need a large HD before the BCD 2000. The controller
can be had for $650 with transporter s/w my total cost will be about
$1100-$1200, not bad for a home system.
Anyone use a similar setup?

While you are etting the decl tuned up, ask if a "SP" mod exists for it
and what it costs. That will ive you almost S-VHS resolutions.

Wayne, just thought I'd pop in on the thread. The "SP" mod is done by an
outfit in Campbell CA. The company is Broadcast Systems Design. Their phone
number is (408) 866-6900. They are NEVER IN during business Hrs. You have
to leave a message and let them get back to you. The mod costs anywhere
from $450-$800 depending on your model of VTR. I have had three decks done
by them and it works just fine. The only drawback is that the 2khz pilot
tone that lights the "SP" light on Sony decks is not part of the deal,
other than that it seems to perform flawlessly.

I'd die to get a single frame setup that cheap (regarding your comments
about the Sony 2860's you see all the time). Please give me more details
– video quality, etc.

I work in Hollywood Ca. so there is a lot of used equiptment
for sale at very reasonable costs. Maybe I could send you a copy.
The Sony VO 2860 is a very old top load 3/4" deck that reminds
me alot of a washing mahine. Very large, laod, and mechanical but
it is controlable by a BCD 2000, and will do single frame edits
kinda with lots of pre-roll. Quality shouldnt be bad and I hope
will copy well to other formats.
I want the controller bad… but I need a giant drive (500+) more…
This set-up should be great for test anims and demos.
