Getting the NEC 74 to work under OS/2 was pretty easy. I'm not sure about
the 37 though. What I've heard about that drive is not too good: Not MPC
compatible, slow access time, 150 Kb/sec transfer rates etc. *IF* it is
SCSI, (is it SCSI?) then you should be able to get it to work. (If the tone
of this post makes you think I'm suggesting looking at the NEC 74 Gallery,
your right :)). I'm not familiar with the new Cdrom_G.sys you mentioned. Is
it available in the IBMOS2 forum or is it in the service pack? All I needed
to do to get the NEC working off the Adaptec 1542b under OS/2 was edit the
Cdrom.sys file and replace the string "TOSHIBA" with "NEC ". Then remove
the /I from the Cdrom.sys line. I understand your problem with the
documentation on this. I still don't know how to add a cache parameter to
the CDFS.IFS line! Here's the relevent lines from my config.sys file.
Cdrom2.sys is simply my edited version of Cdrom.sys. I understand the /N:#
should corrospond to the SCSI ID of the cdrom drive.
BASEDEV=OS2SCSI.DMD BASEDEV=AHA154X.ADD IFS=F:\OS2\CDFS.IFS /Q
DEVICE=F:\OS2\CDROM2.SYS /N:1 DEVICE=F:\OS2\MDOS\VCDROM.SYS
If you get a Trantor card with the Cdrom then the installation is even
simpler. You won't need to edit cdrom.sys at all if you get the Trantor

The CDROM_G.SYS is a newer driver that was posted in OS2DEV (lib 16)
by IBM early last week. It removes the specific checks for Toshiba and IBM
in the driver. As for the NEC CDR-37, well it's a reasonable drive it
seems (I don't need high speed access right now, and it is listed on Irv's
list as one that IBM will support for both audio and sound) and it *IS*
SCSI. Comes with the Trantor T128 adapter. Right now, I'm just having a
devil of a time getting the Trantor Mini-SCSI Plus. The bozos I ordered it
from last Saturday "forgot" to tell me that they don't update their
inventory system as orders are placed. Now it seems that they're out of
stock! GGGRRRRRRRRRRR
At any rate, I appreciate the info on the setup you have. I will have
a look at the other drives once Comdex graces us with its presence to see
what drive prices do. Thanks again Brian! ;-))

Thanks for the info on CDrom_g.sys. I downloaded it last night. Seems to
work the same as the older cdrom.sys except you no longer need to edit the
Brand string. Still no Cd audio, looks like they're saying before the end
of the year for that. Glad to hear the 37 is going to be supported. I used
the T128 for a while under OS/2 and DOS. It works real well. It has a big
advantage over the Adaptec 1542 because you can load the Dos drivers in a
VDM and load mscdex to access Dos programs on the Cdrom. Using the adaptec
I'll have to wait untill IBM adds the NEC support to the Vcdrom driver.
What is the Mini-SCSI Plus? Is that the Parallel port SCSI adapter? Waiting
for Comdex huh? Yep, there's always something better and cheaper just
