I'm looking for a way to write CD-ROM disks that can be read on any cheap
CD-ROM reader. It had to be "reasonably" cheap. Is there such a machine? I
read about a Phillips reader/writer does anyone has any expererience. My
idea is to record my clients historic archives so that they can have access
to them with a cheap read-only CD.
Philips has just announced a CD-Writer for $5995. Other systems (Sony, JVC
and Toshiba) have write-once systems for $8-12K. Some of these prices
include pre-mastering software.
If the pre-mastering software is designed for the job, it will create a
standard ISO 9660-formatted CDROM which is readable by any standard CDROM
drive (some as low as $200, mostly in the $400-600 range). As far as
experience, any of these vendors can send you to happy customers who use
the technology every day. It is stable, based on two international
standards extension efforts that have been working for a couple of years.
