thanx much for looking at my file. I got it last saturday, but I have been
very busy with another project, so I just looked at it yesterday.
I downloaded your file and extracted ANIL.3DS from it. I then merged it
into my file and told 3ds to select all objects. I then told it to delete
old objects in both cases. These were "New Glass" and "newglass2". I also
said yes when it asked me about replacing the materials. However, when I
rendered it, there was not change. Did you perhaps send me the wrong
version?
Also, you noted that the cause of the problem was that I had used the same
material on two different faces of the object. Actually I created two
different objects and separately applied the same material to each (I had
the manual, you see! ;)! So that was not the problem. Then in your file I
checked the materials for each of the two objects in the file ANIL.3DS and
they are different as you have made them – "glass (side)" and "glass
(back)". So, I do have a file with two distinct materials applied to two
distinct objects and still no dice! What gives?

Please re-merge the new object in again, and this time answer NO to the
prompt about replacing materials. In version 2.0, that prompt is reversed,
so NO really means YES.

ok I did what you said, and answered no to replacing the materials and of
course yes for replacing the objects. However, it still does not work! I
am still getting spurious reflections in the rendering. Can you email the
entire 3DS file so I can try it? Also, can you send me a 320×200 rendering
of it, so I can see that we are talking about the same thing – maybe you
fixed something else other than what I was tlaking about. I have the maps
ofcourse so that won't need to be sent.

Argh. I knew I should've just sent you back the entire 350K file.
Unfortunately, the hard disk on that machine crashed about a week ago, and
I don't even _have_ that file anymore.
Regardless, here's what was wrong with it. You had assigned a flat mirror
reflection map to two sides of the building that were facing different
directions. As it says in the manual, you can only assign one flat-mirror
reflection per object, since the refmap takes the face normal of the FIRST
FACE IT SEES IN THE OBJECT LIST as the direction-vector for the reflection.
In your case, you need to split each of the walls of the building up into
its own 2D object, and then make a different mirror material for each wall.
Assign them separately to the different walls, and you'll be fine.
