#Kodak Photo CDs

I read an article a while back in Computer Graphics World about the Kodak
Photo CDs, and about the fact that software packages were beginning (or
going to begin) supporting them. I read the other day that our local
BestBuy could now process onto Photo CDs.
My question is, does any image-editing/processing software out now support
the Photo CD format, what kind of CD-ROM is required to access them, and
can said software packages convert the images to TGA, TIF, etc?

Picture Publisher 3.1 will load photo-CD (or at least it mentions it in the
file load dialog), but I haven't tried it myself.

A new start up called Alta Mira, founded by Alvy Ray Smith (the same guy
who founded Pixar) just showed a Windows-based multi-layer image processing
and compositing program at the Seybold conf. last week. It has direct
hooks for the PhotoCD. The program is called Composer, and it's going to
be very popular when it's released. (I'm not sure exactly when it's going
to come out, but I think they said first quarter '93.)

The real problem is the new CD format that Kodak is using. I'm working on a
project right now that loads the Kodak PhotoCD, but I can't use my Texel
drive because it can't read the format. I don't know whether its the driver
or whether the drive itself will never be able to read the format.
At any rate, any software package that can read a PhotoCD (and there will
be some appearing in the near future) will almost certainly be able to save
the image in the major raster formats (tiff, tga, etc.).

I've been checking into this myself the past couple of days. I just
got Picture Publisher (finally got tired of my old Publishers Paintbrush!)
and it will load Photo CD files. The problem is: will my CD-ROM drive read
a photo CD? I just found out that a CD-ROM drive has to be XA compatable to
read PCDs, and no, I don't know what that means, but I'm curious to know
what drives are (including my Sony).
You might want to buzz over to the Photography forum, it has a
section devoted to Photo CD. ( GO PHOTOFORUM )

The most recent CorelDRAW! package (v3.0b) added support for the Kodak
CD's. Corel will allow you to import just about any type of graphic file
and export it to just about any other type… Since it handles 24-bit
color, it certainly should work with TGA, or TIF files correctly… that
way you can use them for 3D Studio! (subtley bringing the message back into
the forum's intent <g> )
