John, I've heard of such clipping services, but I didn't know they were available in this format. Sounds pretty nice. I liked the TV "record-by-keyword" idea, too. Heh, I can just imagine what would happen to my TV watching habits. 🙂 (What, you mean there's something other than the Public TV station and Star Trek???? |-) ) –dds (…on AutoPilot)

It's up and running on the Amiga, has been for years, yet no one's heard of it. Costs $120 up front, no further charges.

A cable modem: one-way (to you) data transmission at 9600 baud, continuous news, weather, files, and more. Costs $120. I got mine several years ago and it's still running with no additional fee.

John, What is the cost actually for? Hooking it up or is there hardware involved? I know I'm jumping into this late, but did you say anything about the geographical availability? Thanks. -Sean

Yes, it's a little modem-sized box with a cable port and a serial port and some software. It *is* subject to availability, consult your local cable company for more info. I know you can use it over satellite, too, but you have to leave the dish at its transponder… If I could remember the 800 number, I'd post it.

If this is X*PRESS, the number is 1-800-7PC-NEWS

Thanks for the info. I'll check it out when I get back to the States. -Sean

John: Where does one get this, and I guess I gotta call my local cable company and see if they support this service. What is the service called? (So I don't sound too stupid when I call the cable company). // -Mike Schiller \X/ AMIGA! On AutoPilot in sunny Fort Lauderdale

It's called Express PC, I think. The modem-like device appears to be generic; it's made by General Instruments, as the "Infocipher 1000R Data Center".

On a somewhat related note a local company has set up a similar system to this on broadcast TV. You need a special card to receive the data and of course the card is only for IBM PC's but it works just fine with the bridgeboard. If the only IBM application you want to run is this one, as was my case, all you need is the XT bridgeboard which I brought new from a local dealer for $100. So you can run it in your Amiga for only $100 more than on an IBM. The actual service has no subscription fee, you just hook up a video signal to the card, (Cable TV, Antenna or composite video), and your off and running. The service offers news, continuous stock feeds, TV listings, air fares etc. Downloads are supposed to be coming soon. It's in it's early days but keeps getting better. If successful it will expand to other markets. Currently there are only 2 TV stations carrying the service, KICU-TV36 here in the SF Bay Area and a station in LA. The card and software package is about $200. Martin.

I'd love to get that company's name… do you have it handy? Or a phone number?

John: The company is: International Teletext Communications Inc. 1307 S. Mary Avenue, Suite 203 Sunnyvale, CA 94087 1-800-SEE-TEXT

Do you happen to know which station in L.A. is carrying it??
#72896From: Martin WarnettOct 8, 1992 7:29 PM
I think it's KHSN-TV46, Ontario. Call 1-800-SEE-TEXT for more info. If you can get decent reception of this channel, (Cable or broadcast), you can get the data transmissions too.

John, Is that Express??? If so, they no longer make the amiga software for it, but have upgraded the pc and mac versions several times… –Shawn
