#NEW SONY ANIMATION DECK
26 messages in this thread
Hi!
Has anyone out the used the new Sony EVO-9650 (?) Hi-8 deck for Toaster
rendering?
If so, I'd love to hear from you — at $4700 it sure looks a lot more
interesting that Panasonic's AG770 (more $$$)….
Thanks! -Luke
Luke,
I've ordered one, and will let you know what it's like.
Jerry
Thanks for the reply!
Do you know what you plan to use for a single-frame controller? (I assume
one will be needed)??
Luke,
Yes, it's my understanding that one will definitely be needed. The advice
I've gotten here and elsewhere seems to point to the "Personal
SFC" by Nucleus as a very good choice at a very good price ($~350).
Jerry
Thanks for the info!
It comes with a single frame controller, and works great with lightwave,
just get newtek to fax you the data sheet for the proper codes. Also when
the book calls for a crossover plug they really mean NULL MODEM. Im still
in awe over the way the whole setup works.
Thanks much for the info on the Sony…
How about multi-generation quality??
I was going to reply to your earlier question about singleframe controllers
for the 9650, but here you are again: dig: the 9650 has rs232 control, you
need only a standard serial cable, NO SINGLE FRAME CONTROLLER IS NEEDED
WITH THE 9650! NewTek has the appropriate codes to type in to the record
section of LW, or you can get them from the 9650 manual in about 30 mins.
Maybe I should have said serial cable AND null modem adapter ($10.00 at
radioshack)
yo, Aki, Have you used the 9650? we had one here at work, but I was away at
a show when it was here. I'd be interested in your feedback.

I haven't used it personally, but know people who have. They love it,
although others say Hi8 has too many dropouts to be useful for anything but
acquisition. I don't know what the flecktones would prefer…
Victor uses an A1 I think, so…. I'd think a 9650 would be up thier alley.

Aki,
That's wonderful news! Thanks for the advice, and please excuse my admitted
ignorance concerning single-frame VCR's.
Thanks,
Jerry
Are you serious!? No interface is necessary to use the 9650 with
Lightwave!? Of course, you do not get all the features of the Personal
SFC!
Pat,
What would be the most notable features of the Personal SFC that you'd be
giving up??
Jerry
The Timecode sequential frame grab feature is one of them!
Possibility to transfer to video 24 bit pictures done with other softwares
like Imagine and SceneryAnimator.
Possibility to record images that are repeted many times with only one
pass on looping animation…
etc.
Sequential frame-grabs and dumping 24-bit pics from other packages can be
done with the program `Transporter', which is like a software SFC. With it
you can have it creat a script that can dump frames to tape in any
sequence you want.
For example, if you make an animation of a logo that is to swing into the
center of camera view and then pause for 30 frames then swing out the way
it came, for a total of 5 secs, with Transporter you can render the logo
moving into center stage then direct it to dump the frames to tape but
hold the last frame for 30 cuts then lay the frames backwards, viola! You
only had to render part of the animation and not all of it. I wish it were
always that simple. Well it does support just about every display board
out there and they are constanly adding to what it can do.
Look into it, it can really make your life easier.
What is the compagny who makes the Transporter?
The company that produces `Transporter' is Amazing Computers and is
located here in Tampa, Fl. The program is the creation of Leo Martin the
author of `Pro-Textures' Vol. I, II and III, which can also be purchased
from Amazing. The phone # is (813) 977-6511
I heard the Personal SFC can do sequential frame grabs from the 9650..
which one could do with their own arexx program anyway.
Hi-8 deck for Toaster rendering?
Well I have seen it at my local Amiga Dealer and it looked great. They had
it hooked up to an A2000 with the Toaster and were using the program
Transporter as the SFController which works really great! This program
sells for $249.95 and is advertized in Avid by Amazing Computers in
Tampa,Fl. (813) 977-6511
The Sony 9650 will be reviewed n the first issue of Desktop Video World
(January). I can tell you it works quite well with Lightwave, and you
should seriously consider getting the Transporter – it has a lot of
features that take advantage of the 9650, including sequential
framegrabbing from tape. The 9650 has an excellent freezeframe, and the
resulting grabs are excellent, perfect for animated textures for animation
in Lightwave. The Personal SFC, while a great product, only supports RS422
devices, and the 9650 is RS232. The PSFC will not work with the 9650. Plus,
make sure the cable you use on the 9650 is either a null modem cable, or if
a regular serial cable you will need a null modem adaptor…

Desktop Video World? Haven't heard 'bout that one… got a phone #?
Thanks for the info on the 9650!
Regards, Luke
Desktop Video World is a new magazine from IDG (AmigaWorld, MacWorld,
PCWorld, InfoWorld, etc.). The first issue will be on the newstands in mid
d January. It is the first publication to cover the rapidly advancing DTV
market from the computer point of view, embracing all major CPU platforms.
The first issue has a huge number of articles covering everything from
VTR's for DTV use to Full Motion Capture cards to Morphing to 3D Animation
to Video Editing. And a lot more. There are machine specific columns for
the Mac, PC and Amiga, columns from well known videographers, one by a well
known computer/tv personality. There is a review section AND a Product
Spotlight area where application areas are heavily discussed by examing
major products in that application area. Articles are written by some of
the best authors in the Mac/PC/Amiga
market.

Sounds great, Lou… Have they started taking subscriptions yet? Not that
I don't trust the local newsstands, but…
Thanks,
Luke
Could be. Call the Amiga World circulation folks and ask. Maybe you'll be
the first! 800-441-4403
