According to the September/October issue of Link-Up Mr. Joe Webb states
that to view images on an IBM compatible computer you need a 24-bit
graphics board and a 486. Is this correct ??? … Can't we at least see the
images on a 386 and an adapter that handles 8 bit color?.
I'm still waiting for my drive to get an updated driver or I'd have tested
it myself.

You do not need 24 bit color to view images from Photo CD. But Photo CD
images are 24 bit color, so viewing them at lower color resolution will not
be totally satisfying. Also, without graphics acceleration, you might find
it takes a long time to open the files, especially the 18 MB Base*16
images.
You should call the Kodak Information Center (KIC), 800-242-2424, ext. 53.
Tell them the configuration of your system and they will tell you if you
can use it for Photo CD images.
The major issues will be the speed of your 386 CPU (30 MHz or better is
advisable), hard disc capacity (100 MB or better is good), and the RAM in
your system (obviously, you will want at least the RAM of your software
plus an open image, meaning more than 18 MB is advisable).
