#Got my 4000!
31 messages in this thread
Add me to the list of A4000 owners! Got mine Thursday night, and just wish
I had more ways of exploring the new graphics modes. Does the new version
of SAS/C include Dos 3.0 functions? When is DP IV.5 coming out? etc…
Coupla problems. I'm working with my dealer on the problem that my DF0:
doesn't recognize diskchange. I can run the diskchange command and get it
to work, but that's it. Also, I have a 1950 monitor and have some
disappointments with it, at least initially. (I should clarify that I've
had this monitor for years.) It seems I should be able to use Monitor type
DBLNTSC, and I can, except when I try to set my overscan, the screen blacks
out for about an inch or so on each side. Is this normal? If so, is that
how it works with all monitors? I've got full overscan with NTSC, so that's
what I'm using now, but I had really hoped for a good hi-res Workbench with
this version, and so far I'm sticking with good ol' 640×200. Anyway, I have
few impressions other than the ADPro image quality is terrific, MultiView
is pretty neat, especially with images that can be displayed on Workbench,
and Imagine renders in no time! Bring on the demos!

Don,
As of this coming week, Imagemaster v9.21 will be released. 9.21 has
*outstanding* support for the new graphics modes, both in live use of them
and render "to" them for viewing later (with your tool "multiview").
I think when you see just how good those modes can *really* look, you'll
be astonished. There's nothing else out there that can do the new modes
justice when creating native images – nothing at all. Including
"retro-rocket upgrades". :^)

Thanks, Ben. And thanks to Black Belt Systems for setting such high
standards in quality and support. If Amiga had ten vendors with the
commitment of Black Belt, there'd be no stopping us!
Don Weed
Thanks for the Kudos. :^)

You dont hapen to have an ANIM player for the new modes?
No, we sure don't – sorry.

Donald:
I`ve just got my A4000 too. I must be one of the first owners in the UK.
thought I`d let you know I`m having problems with the screen display size
as well. I bought a new 1960 with the A4000 and like you I`ve got some
impressive borders, not only that but the whole thing is off to the right.
Even a fully ajusted Horizontal hold still doesn`t centre it.
If you hear any suggestions give me a shout.
Greg ;^)
Sorry to hear that the 1960 has the same problems. I hope there's some open
discussion about this in the forums or the publications, so we can know how
to get the most possible from our rather expensive graphics machine. By the
way, did you notice the Chip Memory jumper on the motherboard (2 Meg / 8
Meg)?
Don Weed
I think that 8 Megs of chip memory will be available to A4000 owners as
soon as these 8Megs 32bits simm become available (in a few months!)
Right now I have BackTalk running in a window on an 800×600 screen. It has
a large space image as Workbench backdrop, and a couple of 32-color images
are being displayed by Multi-View. I've used up about a meg, and I'm sure I
would either drop Workbench resolution or close it altogether to start up
Imagine or some such. With these new modes, we're gonna need 8 megs in a
big hurry!
Don Weed
The 2 meg 8 meg chip ram symbol was put there by engineering just in case
the hardware guys added the feature, but they didn't. It might still be
added but not in the near future. The present motherboard can't do 8
megs.
–Paul Still on AutoPilot
Pat,
You're wrong. Dave Haynie says the current Alice chip supports only 2MB of
Chip RAM. The 8MB jumper was apparently there as early on they had hoped
to make it do 8MB.
Darnit.
🙁 Bad news! It would be great to have 8Megs of chip memory! Mostly with
256k backdrops…
Well there is a Jumper on hte mother board that is labled CHip RAM and has
both a 2 and 8 meg setting
Don:
I haven`t yet had a look at the guts of the thing, I`m not sure how much
sense it would make to me anyhow. I have read, in the Adding Memory
chapter, that "There are no jumpers to set when adding chip RAM." It is
also categorical about 2Megs being the maximum chip RAM configuration.
I don`t know of course how accurate the manual is.
I have to say at this point that I`m not a developer. I have an A4000
because I need a lot of power to run the recording studio I`m setting up
with my fiance, who is a well known musician in the UK. Because of her
status, C= UK have released an A4000 to us and they are looking to gain
some publicity from it.
Greg
AutoPilot without the flicker is a sight for sore eyes! :^)
Greg,
Who is your fiancee? C'mon, you can tell…

\\// it possible…
Jonathan:
My fiance is the famous Percussionist Evelyn Glennie. Tell me the part of
the world you are in and I`ll tell you when we`re likely to be there.
Greg :^)
Greg,
I am located in Albany, NY. I would guess that you and Evelyn will never
come here, since this is not exactly the cultural center of
America…unless she also competes in monster truck competitions 🙂
Jonathan
Jonathan, via AutoPilot // Only Amiga makes

Huh?
Monster truck competition is the definitive of culture.
–Paul Still on AutoPilot
Paul,
RE: Monster trucks vs. english percussionist…
I, for one, enjoy decent music more than beer fueled drivers driving
hi-test fueled monster trucks crashing into each other…however, I think
that the we are more likely to see the trucks says some thing about Albany.
WWF wresting events are also pretty popular here, too.
Jonathan
hmmm… William Kennedy might disagree <g>
Michael,
Don't forget that William Kennedy was writing about the past glories of
the Albany region…Albany was once a thriving city with many ethnic
neighborhoods, most of which have been destroyed. This is the same for
Troy and Schenectady, which are even in more of a decline. This area is
definitely in the rustbelt…we have seen many hometown industries either
close up or move out.
This may change before the end of the century, since the NY legislature
is debating whether a maglev transit system, from NYC to Albany would make
sense. I believe that it would pump new lifeblood across the entire
state, as communities were colonized by NYC refugees…

Greg,
Good luck with the music. I understand there's actually going to be a
Deluxe Music upgrade to go with the new DSP chip. That should touch off
some pretty nifty development in sound and music over the next year. Also,
several people have responded to me that I really did see that jumper
switch. I only looked once, though. Now I'll have to open it up again and
double-check.
Don Weed
Donald:
I`m sure you are correct about the jumper, I was only quoting from the
manual.
You seem to know something I don`t about the DSP chip. Although there is
reference to fitting a DSP I`ve heard no rumours about when such a
chip/board will be available.
Greg :^)
Greg,
Check out a file called CBMFUT.TXT (I think) somewhere in the libs. I
believe there are indications that the DSP chip might be available in about
6 months.
Greg
Would we know your wife's music? I'd be interested to know, as I work for
BBC Radio and am a manager within the same section that runs the BBC
Radiophonic Workshop (for those in the US, that's the same section that
composes the music for things like Doctor Who 🙂
Mike (from the UK)
Mike,
I'm certain that you will of heard of Evelyn Glennie the percussionist.
we've just recently made a series of 6 TV programs with the BBC (in
Scotland) called "SoundBites". Evelyn presents the series and has 2 well
known musical guests each program as well as performing herself with the
BBC Scotish Symphony Orchestra. It is due to be broadcast in Scotland
quite soon, the rest of the UK will get it in the spring.
BTW we are not married yet (next summer).
Best wishes,
Greg :^)
Donald,
I have also had trouble using the 3.0 overscan utilities to center
screens etc. I just use an old utility called screenshift. It opens on the
WB but adjusts all screens in the system. It is very handy for lining up
DCTV screens! Let me know if you can't find it here and I'll upload it.
…AutoPilot Engaged…
-Paul-
Paul,
It would be useful to have a filename for the screen centreing prog.
Thanks Greg :^)
Lee is working on an updated DPaint already. There is no announced date
when it will become available. She is accepting input for enhancements if
you can find a way to get the input to her.

I could not presume to suggest improvements to one of the classic programs.
I just hope it fully supports all new graphic modes. I can't wait to use
Imagine and Deluxe Paint together in HAM8 Hi-Res!
