#3D Studio w/ SGI Irisvsn

Has anyone had any experience with running 3D Studio 2.0 with the Silicon Graphics Irisvision board set? I've tried using the EXP driver that is supplied with the boards, but the rendering seems to actually take longer. There should be a way to utilize the Irisvision boards to there maximum advantage in rendering, but I haven't found it yet. Any Ideas? Tim

Tim, The IrisVision boards have drivers for accelerating AutoCAD, but don't do anything for 3D Studio. Your rendering time is all on the cpu, then pixels get drawn on the rendering display, at whatever resolution you're in. The people to beat up are Silicon Graphics, who stopped selling the board some time ago. Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates

Tim, You have my sympathies. A friend of mine also bought the Irisvision 24-bit version and has had little use for it other than messing around with the slick demos (esp. the flight stimulator <g>). I've played with it too and he was also under the wrong impression that it could help him with rendering – all it can do is act as a 24-bit display board as far as 3ds is concerned and the included .exp driver would not work with 3ds2 very well. I never found out if they updated the drivers for people who bought the board. I believe it can perform some interesting tricks with autocad models but nothing with 3ds models. Martin

I do have one application that requires the board set, so it is not a total waste of money. But, like I've said before, I is hard knowing that there is a Weitek sitting in there that isn't usable. Speaking of which, does anyone know if there is a 50mhz version of the Weitek available, and if so, how much does it improve the rendering speed. Thanks, Tim

Tim, Sorry, no Weitek for 50MHz, and you can't cool down a 33MHz enough to work reliably at that high a speed. Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates
