Amiga UNIX

I am seriously considering getting UNIX for my 3000. But, I need to know
how fast it really is. I want to run OpenWindows under it. Can anyone give
me a basis for comparison? I have used SPARC Station ELC's. How fast is it
compared to them? Is it unbearable? I would get a lot of memory for it.
Also, is a 240meg Harddrive enough?

Tim;
Its pretty slow compared to a SPARC station. As to "unbearable", well
thats asking for a rather subjective answer. My answers are based upon
VERY limited experience with other Unix boxes.
Compared to the "top of the line" HP (or even AmigaDOS), you can just
about sleep between window operations. Compared to OS\2 however, it
really flies! Network performance seems pretty good.
Unix has a rather low priority with C= but there is work going on. I
expect that disk I/O performance will improve markedly "RSN".
I wish that I had a bit more experience with flavors of Unix on DOS boxes
but I can only relay opinions of others that do. The original AmigaUnix
release was slower in some areas and faster in others when compared to
Unix for DOS boxes. The latest release of AmigaUnix appears to have
improved considerably in operational performance.
A single 240 meg drive is plenty for Unix itself. Indeed, you can put on
all of the source and still have about 50 meg left.
IMHO, your mileage may vary and all that 🙂
