#Flicker-fixers

One last update about the CBM A2320 Display Enhancer: it works best with
the Topaz fonts in super hires, interlaced (1364 x 464) mode. I was using
some other font and commented before that the Workbench text was somewhat
jagged.
When I changed the fonts back to Topaz, this "problem" went away. Now – if
only I could find a Topaz 13 (or 15). Even Topaz 11 is a little too small
in super hires, interlaced.

Jim,
The system will 'make' those sizes for you… even if they aren't
displayed in the font requester, type them in (the appropriate place) and
the system will scale em up for ya. (you might have to try a few different
sizes before you get something usable tho).

Oh – where/how to I make "the system" generate additional font sizes? I
know that I can use Fountain for my V2.04 system, but that is only for
Compugraphic, or whatever, fonts.

If you have 2.04, just open the font at that size. "The system" will take
care of it.

I do have 2.04, but still do not know what you mean when you say "just
open the font at that size". When I use the FONTS Prefs program, it does
nothing but let me select what IT finds. I can't make any changes there.
I am not trying to get a different Topaz size from an application program
which allows me to select the font size, if that is what you are referring
to.

Jim,
You should be able to in any program that lets you 'type in' the font
point size… for example, run the system Font prefs program, select one
of the fonts to change, then it will list the available pt sizes for each
font in the font requester… click on the string gadget below the pt
sizes and type in a size that isn't listed, one will be created (in
memory, not disk).
– Keith
Hmmm – an interesting concept: 'run Prefs, select on font, click on STRING
GADGET BELOW THE POINT SIZES, and one will be created for you'. With my
V2.04 Prefs FONTS requester, there ISN'T any string gadget?

Hmmm… sorry if I've confused the issue, as a developer, it's hard to keep
track of what features came along in which OSs <grin>. Anyway, I DO think
that the capability is there (in 2.04), if the system font prefs program
doesn;t have a string gadget, you might try it in some other program that
does (if you have any). If not… sorry for the goose-chase.

The std 2.04 fonts preferences won't scale it. I tried scaling the font
in a couple of programs; JRComm wouldn't, but BackTalk would, so it's
possible. Also, the setfont command has a scale option for use from the
shell. Personally, I find all fonts scaled in this manner look awful.

Thanks for the clarification. And yes, they don't always look to good.
But if you double the height (for example, and asssuming that's what you
needed) they look ok.
– Keith
Ok on trying to keep track of the base functions of the various levels of
AmigaDOS – that's easy to do. Since I don't have any application, that I
can think of offhand, that DOES have the ability to create a new font
point size, is there anything that you can recommend?

According to Ed Swatchek (msg #73934), the Setfont command may have a
scale option for use in a shell. Also, apparently, JRComm won;t let you,
but BackTalk will (term program-wise). He also mentions that fonts scaled
in this manor don't always look too hot… as I'd mentioned in an earlier
msg, you might have to try several different sizes before you get one
that's usable. Other than that, the only thing I know to recommend would
be to look in the libs for more fonts/sizes and/or a font editor so that
you could create/edit your own. (or use the FED font editor that comes with
the system)
– Keith
Thanks for the tip, Keith. I looked up SETFONT, and it DOES allow one to
specify a font size OTHER than the system defaults, AND, it is ONLY good
for the Shell that it is invoked from. Oh well.
I did download a BUNCH of fonts files, but V2.04 Prefs FONTS for 'system
default text' excludes most of these additional fonts, whereas 'Workbench
icon text' and 'Screen text' don't ??? I may yet "discover" FED.

The "System Default Text" must be a NON proportional font. This was done
for compatibility reasons (programs opening windows that don't specify
thier own font will use this font).
– Keith
OK – so that is why Prefs limits the available fonts when chosing one for
the System Default Text – they have to be non-proportional. Guess I need
to find a bunch more of them there animals, then. Thanks.
