Can somebody tell me what 3Ds is, is 3Ds R2 one product, or is 3Ds and R2
two different programs? Could you tell me what it(they) do? Right now I
have Autodesk Animator, but 3Ds sounds neet. Also, how much does it(they)
cost, and where can I buy it? —Matt Anderson
3DS and R2 are the same product. R2 just stands for release 2. It is a 3
dimensional rendering and animation program. (and a great one, too, in my
opinioin.) It costs three thousand dollars. Pretty expensive (especially if
you can't get your employer to buy it, I plunked down the cash out of my
own pocket for at the moment amounts to my own amusement. I am definitely
not sorry, though.) that isn't much of an explanation, but it is a big and
fairly complicated program, and there are people creeping about here that
can give you a much more comprehensive explanation than I. Or you can do
what I did and call Autodesk and ask for information. They sent me a nifty
video tape that I was greatly impressed by. By the way, was another one put
out for Release 2? I wouldn't mind getting a copy, even though I now
(finally) get to play with the actual program. This last question is for
anyone who can answer…

The single product you're wondering about is "Autodesk 3D Studio, Release
2." Drop the "Autodesk" and compress the results, and you get 3dsR2, or
sometimes only R2. It's a professional, three-dimensional modeling,
rendering, and animation system. It's $3K (a bit steeper than Autodesk
Animator), and requires an 80386 at minimum. 3dsR2 is sold only through
official multimedia dealers, who you can reach at 800-525-2763.
If you want some idea of the capabilities of 3dsRs, download some of the
files from the 3D Studio library. Most of these are flics, but 3dsR2 is
also capable of producing broadcast-quality animations.
