Thanks for the MSD tip. You learn every day. According to MSD I have 0 K
free of UMB. Period. In Autoexec.bat, I have Doskey.com loaded high,
MSCDEX, mouse.com and kbf.com. KBF.com is a little tsr that modifies my
keyboard to an IBM Selectric typewriter keyboard. It is a very small TSR.
This way I can type French caracters. In config.sys I have tansi.sys
(Trident's equivalent of ansi.sys), TVGACRTC.SYS also from Trident and
SBPCD.SYS. When I boot my machine I have 614k of free memory. I will have
to remove something I guess. Do I really need tansi.sys? Finally I do
have the line: DOS=HIGH,UMB in my config.sys.

My opinion of the best way to get better UMB management is to invest in a
product like 386MAX or QEMM. They take advantage of areas of UMB which
EMM386 does not. You may want to try excluding some of EMM386, for example
MONOCHROME monitor support if you don't need it. That will give you back
some additional space. Also, if you don't need EMS memory, state noems on
the EMM386 line. That will save the space required to build a pageframe.

Simon you may want to try these:
EMM386.EXE I=B000-B7FFF
or EMM386.EXE I=E000-E7FFF
or combine the two as EMM386.EXE I=B000-B7FF I=E000-E7FFF
If your using the b000-b7ff you may need to add the DEVICE=MONOUMB2.386 to
the [ENH] section of your SYSTEM.INI file. To do so you may need to unpack
the monoumb2.38? file from your windows installation disk.
If that still doesn't give you enough upper memory (it will give you A LOT
more) then if you're really brave you may want to include some of the areas
between F000-F7FF. Ya got to be careful up here though. Take care. Brian
