#Database for CD?

I'm trying to collect as much information as possible about different
database systems that are suitable for use with CD-ROMs — that is, for
storing information on CDs, not to~ access data on CDs through a database.
I'm interested in both database engines and front-ends.
If there is sufficient interest, I'll be happy to summarize the responses
for the library.

I for one am very interested in what you discover. I just did a mailing to
about 30 companies listed as having CDROM "retrieval" software, and asked
specifically for data base management capabilities. I'd be happy to let you

I just found out that Meckler Pub. Co. has a CD-ROM of reviews & demos of
search & retrieval engines for CDs. You may want to look into that. If
you're interested, I also just found out that The One-Off CD Shops are
going to start carrying Meckler books & CD-ROMs about CD-ROMs, so I could
get it for you as soon as we've figured out what we're doing with that.
It's about $50, I think.
Meanwhile, I'd be glad to hear of anything you find, too. Somehow, DB info
seems awfully hard to come by in this field. Of all the stuff I picked up
at CD-ROM Expo, only two or three sheets talked about more than full-text
search — none about true relational functionality. I know it's being
done, because I've seen it, but most of it must be with in-house developed
tools.
There is one product which wasn't what I was looking for this time, but
which is really interesting if you need it. It's an engineering database
called "InnerView" from TMS, Inc. POC is Rick Scanlan, P.O. Box 1358,
Stillwater, OK 74076 (405) 377-0880 FAX (405) 377-0452. It runs under
Windows, and is a graphic database engine. Very well done!

I would also be interested in what you learn. It would be most useful for
OPA's newsletter or for a file to be available here on the Forum.
It would be particularly interesting to get the pespective of a potential
user, rather than simply comparing spec sheets and feature lists.

Sorry to be contentious, but I was actually the person who posted the
original message in this thread 😉 I still stand by my offer to post an
annotated bibliography, although the traffic has been mostly people who
want to receive the info, not give it. Where are the database vendors?
Don't they want people to know what they have?

Sorry, I didn't mean to slight you. I agree, it can be tough to find out
who these vendors are, and I really don't know why. Well, maybe it's
because "retrieval software" for CDROM has been until recently a very
specialized field, and most vendors (with a couple of notable exceptions)
have been pursuing customers on a one-at-a-time basis.
I can fax you a list of companies I am aware of later this week, and maybe
this will help. If it would be of general interest, I could post this list
as a file here in the Forum. But it is sketchy and incomplete, ecept for
those companies that are members of OPA or with whom I have had some
dealings.
Another factor is that multimedia productions do not necessarily use
retrieval software in the way we have known it. So there has evolved a
difference between "retrieval" and "authoring" software (eg. the difference
between Dataware or PLS and Macromind Director or Asymetrix).
I'd greatly appreciate any help you care to offer for the benefit of
everyone looking to produce an application!

I, for one, would be very interested in the list you mentioned. I have
been looking for front-end software for CD-ROM. And while it is out there
(somewhere). It is well hidden.
