My husband and I are having a discussion about the viability of making
a living using the Amiga in the are of "Computer Graphics" (high
end). I believe that you are out there some where, and he says
NObody does it. He wants proof that somebody out there is making at
least 30K/year using the Amiga. He beleives that people only use the
Amiga for games, 3D, and video applications. Would you please help
me to prove him wrong? Please write back and let me know what you
do, how you do it, and what kind of set up you have… Thanks a
bunch…
He uses Freehand, Illustrator, Coral Draw, Photoshop, Photostyler,
Pagemaker and Quark. He says there is no Amiga compatability for
output, or rather that it would cost $25,000 to have a linotype.

I have a LINO (actually a Varityper) and can output just fine to it with my
Amiga using PPage, Pagestream and PDraw.
Since I'm just getting it back on-line I can't say that I'm earning 30K a year
right now. Ask me again in another year. 🙂
If you have an Amiga file you want output to an imagesetter, send it to me
I'll send you back a sample page from it.

Long time, no type! How've you been? Where are ya working? Did you
move back into your house?
Can you beleive that Ev and I are having this argument? He is just
frustrated witht the limited output for the Amiga. You can't own one, and
where we are is pretty remote in terms of convenience. Our Amiga dealer
sells more IBM's than Amiga, so there is very little support.
Since I have your ear, I wonder if you can help me with two things. 1)
it took me five (count 'em 5) tries to get online this morning. When I
Hit"O" to start the connection process, the screen (miniscreen) starts
with "ATZ", then "OK", then when the dial tone comes on there are
symbolslike these…"11111111111111111“~~~~~~~~~~~~lllllll

~~~~~~~" running across the screen. Then most times now, the "Connect" is
scrambled and the whole process freezes. I have to turn off my modem, and
start all over again. Since I am paying for each telephone connection,
this is getting to be costly… Any suggestions? Could it be my Modem
losing it's pitch?
The other thing is that I do not have the AP upgrade. I wrote to Steve
about a couple of problems I had, and he said to get the upload. He
declined to tell me whether or not there was a cost, and exactly how to
get it. Are there new "docs" too? Could this be part of my connect
problem?
I will be making more Biscotti this fall, and would be happy to send
you some. I am off to St. Louis to visit and check on our house which was
saved from flooding (so far), and try to put it on the market. I'll be
gone a week, but I will be here for most of the day…

When you say, "…limited output for the Amiga…"
What type of output do you require?
What do you mean by "You can't own one,…" If you mean imagesetter, yes I do
own one, might I interest you in its purchase? 🙂 If not, I would be happy to
output a couple test pages for you, just send me a disk file, either Postscript
(be sure to set up the print parameters correctly) or in PPage, Pagestream or
PDraw format.
Print parameters for Imagesetter:
Roll Paper
11.7 inches wide
Centering page is helpful
For crop marks make output page size (not page layout size) large enough to
include the dimensions of the crop marks, plus page should be oriented to allow
length of page to run with the length of the roll not its width. If you don't
do this with crop marks there won't be enough space to print them.
As for the logon problems, it sounds like maybe a problem with the
phone line. I had a similar problem, right down to paying for the
long-distance call. Finally I couldn't log on at all, called the
P-company and complained, the service guy called and said the problem
was fixed. I asked what it was he said a bird nest in a junction box
four miles from my house had gotten wet and became conductive just
enough to cause enough conductivity to make the cross-connections. If
your problem continues I'd call Repair and ask them to check their
lines.
Love the Biscotti, still have the recipe you sent me, guess I'll have
to try and bake them myself. Of course I'll be happy to receive a
package of your world-famous Lisa van Sand Biscotti! <grin>
I think CIS is having some problems with their network. I had to try
twice to log on myself, and I got a scrolling screen full of "?"'s
the first time.

We have lots of customers using PageStream to make a living. Many of them are
successful and some have lots of computers running PageStream in one office.
People send us books, magazines, flyers, ads and other work all the time which
is produced in PageStream. PageStream files can be printed at Mac and PC
oriented service bureaus.

You need to talk to a guy named Chris Tolmie. He has been using the Amiga
for years in DTP and graphics. With ADPro Interchange and the like,
compatibility in graphics is not that much of an issue. On the PC HiJack
reads/converts Amiga formats as well. Also if you have a tricked out
Amiga with Emplant or bridgeboard/Amax then you have 3 machines in one
box. What more could ya want?
I mainly do video, but all my printed material is done with PageStream
(can go head-to-head with any DTP on any platform) then take my stuff to
the local lino boys on a PC format disk with PostScript output files that
they look at on their Macs and say things like, "you forgot the
registration mark on page 1…" then they just run the stuff no problemo
to the old 2400 dpi color print beasty.
As far as graphics, if you don't make it, it won't be becuase of the
Amiga. The packages are there, the professional I/O quality is there, it
is merely a case of the talent and business acumen of the user.
Now, if you are talking networked accounting/data base packages for a
multi-million dollar company, better get something else….

Paul,
If you have ADPro you can change the image from either a FrameStore or IFF
to a TIFF or PostScript. Most service beareaus can take either of thos
file formats on a PC format disk and put them out on a high quality high
resolution printer. In fact, if you have a Kinko's near you, you could
take it to their DTP department for them to print. For a single picture,
I'm not sure what the cost would be, but I would expect it to not be too
unreasonable.
I hope I answered you question; you were talking a single image, not an
entire animation, right?

Oh – O.K. Paul – now I'm on your wavelength. You want output to a
photographic emulsion type printer rather than to a standard color
print(ed) media format like color brochure, or magazine print. This
I'm not so sure of. I think I remember seeing a PostScipt to
Polaroid printer that would go to 16 x 20 both as prints and
transparecies. To get to Cibachrome you have to get to a copy neg or
slide first which would require an RGB/NTSC to photo step in there
that I am not knowledgable enough to do anything but speculate.
Well, I was going to say that if I were faced with the problem I'd
look in the back pages of VTU first. I just did. Here is a place
that does 4×5 transparencies or 35 mm slides from IFF or Color
PostScript. Hammond Photgraphic Services, 11280 Washinton Place,
Culver City CA 90320 (310) 390-3010. Before you try the porcess you
may want to find out if you need to make compensations at any point
to get the photo output to look as true as possible to the "keeper"
on you screen.
Sorry can't be of more help, but your into an area I've not yet
ventured. Let us know what you find out…

Hey! This is a good lead, thanks for the detective work, now it makes

On a side note, that Primera printer is an astounding value and beautiful
prints. Very tempting.
