#I.K./Skeletal Anim.
8 messages in this thread
If anyone on the forum is planning on developing inverse
kinematics/skeletal functions into an IPAS routine for 3D Studio
could you please leave me an e-mail. I have an interest in any
projects related to this aspect of IPAS implementations.
GaryY mentioned that Brent Malnack is developing this type of IPAS. He
has a column in the AV/Video magazine and is supposedly the Art
Director for the Great Plains Motion Picture Co. in Omaha, Neb. Maybe
Gary can give you more information.
If you hear anything about kinematics/skeletal spline stuff please let me know,
too.
thanks,
John Tissavary (La Luna cie)
Contrary to Martin's reply, Brent Malnick's upcoming IPAS routine is going to
be a KXP that does DYNAMICS, not kinematics. It'll handle collision detection,
wind, and gravity. At the moment, I don't know of anyone developing an inverse
kinematics package.

Gary,
I know, I appreciate the input. I brought the question up on the forum, in case
there were some renegade IPAS programmers, working on such an entity, that
no-one knew about.
I spoke to Steve, and I think we're going to go ahead and try this. If it
doesn't work, then we'll resort to plan B, but I think we can do it.
We're going to spend the next couple of weeks trying to do a couple of mockups,
and see how it goes.

Gary,

OK, that makes sense. I stand corrected. He gave his upcoming product a plug in
his _own_ column in AV/Video (Sept '93). The address for anyone who wants to
know is:

Gary, BTW it's Malnack, not Malnick <g>.
Hi Gary,
We spoke some months back about a 6min animation sequence in a rave
video…remember? Sorry for not getting back to you as promised but
job moves (and this troublesome thing called "wife") has been keeping
me busy.
However, I will soon be embarking on a mini project which I hope will
enable me to animate a collection of objects -resembling a person- as
a human (some of it has already begun). The idea is that by linking
external routines, possibly in a similar way to linking objects, one
can be prompted for the movements required of the "person" along the
keyframer.
Soooo, you can input 'walk forward/5 steps' at a keyframe, next
keyframe 'look right' and so on. I once did something similar in Lisp
(when I were a lad long time ago) with AutoCAD, created slides after
DVIEW commands and put them into Animator v1. Worked just fine.
I would be very interested in reading your comments
Mr P.K.
PS I am using a friends compuserve account again….
There's a simple and interactive way to do that in R3 with the new
File Insert function in the Keyframer. It lets you build libraries
of movements and apply them to hierarchies as macros.
