Can anybody tell me how I can dissolve from one full screen 24 bit
image to another from within Video Post, as when I try it the first
images gets darker before the the second image is full strength, I
have tried fading out the first image at the same time as I fade the
second image in, but this still does not give me a straight dissol

Yes, there is a trick to it! Keep your first image at "full power",
and just have the second one fade in! Don't have the first one fade
out, or you will get exactly what you asked for! <g>

Yeah. Don't fade the first image. I had the same problem, and it was
blowing my mind till I realized that, as the first image fades,
there's not enough light from the second yet to keep the overall
level constant. Just fade in the new image and it works fine.
Don't touch the first queue, but activate the FadeIn transition
and the AlphaQueue in the second queue.. this should do the trick..
