#MaxTransfer settings IDE

I have a customer who is having problems copying large files to her hardrive. She has an Amiga 4000 with an IDE drive installed. I suspect that the MaxTransfer settings were set wrong when the harddrive was formatted, and this is causing the whole problem. My question is, what *should* the MaxTransfer settings be for the harddrive when you format it? Apparently the normal "0xFFFFFF" does not do the trick (correctly). Any help would be appreciated. Mark… I cut off -2- F's on the MaxTransfer setting and that took care of the file transfer prob in my case. You might want to try cutting off -1- F first and you don't have to reformat the drive, just do a warm boot…. Eddie.Ski

Mark….try 0xFFE0 I think Commodore recommended a value just under 64k for those IDE drives (Maxtor's one) that needed it. I heard of people using a value just under 128k with no problems. Unless the 64k causes a slow data transfer rate (check with Diskspeed) as compared to 128k, I'd stay with the 0xffe0. later!

Actually, I've yet to find a drive that doesn't work with the rate of 0x1ffe0, which is the rate recommended by Commodore Engineering for such drives.

My MaxTor IDE performs very badly (slow) in my 4000, which is because of my old motherboard rev. The system also doesn't mount the drive on power-up (only after a warm boot). The drive (a Maxtor 7345A) works great in newer 4000s. Was speed and mounting the problems your customer is having? -Chris PS- Any suggestions on how I can get Gold Service to fix my machine? I can't get through.
