The Pyros Partnership, Inc., of Newport Beach, CA, is extremely proud
to anounce that we received word today that we won the "General"
catagory of the first annual Autodesk Images Awards!
The piece that won is the now-famous singing mouse animation by Bruce
Edwards, our Creative Director, which you can catch on the new
Autodesk 3DS3 demo reel that just started shipping.
Bruce wrote the song, played it, and sang it, as well as created most
of the animation. The piece is 2.5 minutes long, and proves that 3DS
can be used for high-end character animation!

What a great idea, you get to see a person's portfolio, hire them
because you like it, and then turn around and enter part of their
portfolio into a contest, that in turns generates lots of company
publicity. What marketing course did you go to anyway?
I hope you're paying Bruce alot of dollars. Does he get to keep the
award and the equipment he won?
Inquiring minds want to know.

Well, not quite. What I didn't mention in detail was that I sold
Bruce his 3D Studio, taught him how to use it, helped him plan out
the project, answered his technical support questions (it was his
first PC program, after all, he only did musid sequencing on the Mac
before this) and worked with him through the animation.
After he finished the first test, he brought it to my office, and he
and I spent over 100 hours polishing it up together over a very long
week to get it ready to submit for Gary's tape and the competition.

The previously agreed upon split was that he got the prizes, we got
the publicity. (Which means that he makes much more money in the
long run, since he heads our animation department.)

Now you know! <g> I didn't want to take anything away from his
basking in the glory of the award, but I guess it did look a little
funny!

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. You can look at it more as a merger
of two companies, if you prefer. Being that he is now part-owner of
our animation department, we brought along his equipment as well as
his expertise. We did the same thing a few months back with
TrialVision, a company which markets and creates general computer
graphics for lawyers (mainly charts and graphs, maybe an animation
some day!) They have also brought in their equipment and clients to
the deal.
Sometimes to grow, it is better to buy out other companies than to
generate all the growth from within.
I hope you know I was just hassling you! I think it's great that Bruce
is on board, I'd loved to have gotten him. I was actually approaching
the new hire as quite a marketing/advertising ploy. At Siggraph, I
had made a joke at your booth that you should hire him just to put
the piece on your demo tape, and then I saw that the Pyros
Partnership had won an award for the piece, so I had had to at least
follow up.
I really am looking forward to seeing more work.

I try not to take _anything_ too seriously! Who else would leave a
meeting with a client yesterday with a 'previous engagement' excuse,
throw on some old clothes, and go on an 'H/P appreciation night'
ocean fishing trip? Between us, Bruce and I caught 23 fish (mostly
bonito, sea bass, mackerel, and a few unknowns). Keep selling those
H/P plotters!
I didn't know you liked fishing!!!! We'll have to get together and
fish sometime! That's one of my favorite things to do.

Love it! Not too much ocean fishing, actually, my tastes run more to
flyfishing for trout up in the mountains. Only made it up a few times this
year, we need to plan a spring trip!
Anyone else interested? I know Jim Biebl (Gaviota Graphics) will be there,
probably Tom Jaggers (Jerde Partnership), also. If we can drag Bob Bennett
away from Autodesk for a week, I know he's in, too.

Great! I'd recommend taking an afternoon class or two, though, in flailing
some line around in a controlled environment! It can get interesting out
there on a river with overhanging trees! <g>

We have been talking about putting on a one-week class on advanced
character animation for a while. Schedule it in the dead of winter
for the rest of the country, and see who wants to come on down!

Yup!…I had my family with me so I had to balance the business & Recreation
thing. As it was, I think we did more Daughter related things than Wife related
things but my wife Sue and I figured that our 21 year old Daughter wouldn't be
taking many more trips with us so what the heck, we did a few more things on
her list than ours.
If you're a parent you understand how that goes…you just want them to be
happy and safe. That's why my wife Sue went with us to Street Scene …..she
normally wouldn't even consider going anyplace where 60,000 people were having
a "Party".<G>
She had a good time in spite of it though….of course there WERE a lot of cops
roaming around too.
So when is this animations get together going to be held?

As soon as we can get our act together and organize it! Probably mid
January or so, by the time we get the course outline done. We are
talking a rather complicated concept here, and one that doesn't lend
itself well to mathematical formulas, but artistic expression.

see the Christmas shows second week of December so getting out to
California in midJanuary would be absolutly wonderful….Now If I

We are just a few blocks from Orange County Airport (John Wayne Airport,
now), although still sometimes still referred to as Santa Ana Airport. The
call letters are still SNA for that reason.

OK, the program is done, and we will start shipping immediately!
The program takes images that were _not_ rendered in fields and turns
them into smooth field rendered images. It does this by taking every
other horizontal line and combining them with every other horizontal
line from the next frame.
It is made to work with programs that do not field render, such as
VistaPro. Just render twice as many frames as you need, and the
program does the rest!

those one of these days, about a milenium from now (g). I just
