forum members…meanwhile people for people, people are going to be
discounted big for conference so if you want em buy em here&now but

ps you have to explain eclipse, now that my asg stuff is worthless i
swear i am using acad w/out an archi pack..like dview w/ no
camera…no walls or windows, i'm dying….
Evan won't be there. He's going up to the Daratech dealer's conference
in Boston on the 14th. I'll be glad to tell you about Eclipse. I'll
be staying at the Holidy Inn Civic Center on Eighth Street.

I've upgraded to your APT latest version from the old Dealership Pro-Soft Stuff
originally….Love It!
BTW Is your "FACADE" (not sure about the spelling here) Product
shipping yet? As a Multimedia Dealer I would probably have better
luck selling that as opposed to the APT package because we no longer
focus on AutoCAD sales, just the Multimedia Side of things…Although
I do have a good percentage of AEC and Design Build firms in my data
base…probably close to 102 I would imagine. Maybe we should talk
about a mailing or something. Give me a call at (414) 435-7345. Or
you could E-Mail me your thoughts on this. I am interested in
looking at the FACADE product as soon as it ships. LaTER, David.

Facade will be shipping real soon now. The only thing holding it up is the
manaul (which means me) and I'm about to loose a week on that thanks to
Autodesk University.

Sounds Like a deal to me! BTW I have currently listed 102 AEC type businesses
that could benifit plus a few Design Build places.
That.. plus in-house handouts would probably bring it to about 150 on the
mailing pieces….not a lot…. but these are "Real" AutoCAD users plus they
all for the most part still haven't made that "Giant" Leap into 3D…which is
rather discusting considering they would probably benifit by a 60% increase in
business if and when they make that switch..I see a benifit of the AutiVision
product here also…which could eventually lead them to 3D Studio and "Serious
Presentations".
The learning curve on 3D isn't even 1/2 that of what it took them to learn
AutoCAD in the first place. I wish someone…Hint…Hint..would do a paper on
what it takes the average A&E Firm to go from 2D to 3D and Presentations in
3DS. I know Autodesk put together the ROI disk but that really doesn't work
for this type of application.
Most firms beleive they have to make this MAJOR overhaul of how they do
business and how they prepair their documents…..It get's to be a real can of
worms if you don't understand the Architectural Business…Lord Knows…my
partner in the other AutoCAD dealership was the Major Partner in a 50 man
45million dollar A&E Firm and the 4 years I worked with that relationship
educated the HELL out of me….not to mention gave me a few good quotes
like…."Architects Build Monuments to Themselves"…..he…heh..I love
it..SOOOO TRUE!
Here's one off the top…."Ta hell with reality…just build it accourding to
my Spec's". <G> Hmmm…But I digress.

I know your looking for a David Cohn article on the topic but I thought I'd let
you know that I'll have a few war stories on this topic for you quite shortly
as I am trying to convince the 4th largest architectural firm in the country to
present ideas with 3ds as our tool.
Not that you don't know this first hand but architecture tends to be the last
profession to embrace new technology in the way business is performed. The
people in charge of most of the established firms have completely missed the
computer age and are mostly computer illiterate. Schools emphasize the art in
architecture and its presentation. This translates to most principals as soft
hand drawn sketches. Only a very few firms have been able to exhibit their
unique style while presenting computer images.
A brief anecdote and then I shut up:
I worked for Philip Johnson a couple of years ago and was producing a constant
stream of 3d computer images of several high rise buildings we were working on.
He was constantly muttering, "Your drawings always make it look like we're
finished design. We need to make it look less thought out, less complete or
the client will think we're done." I think there is some validity to the
argument that 3d computer images can amount to overkill in some cases but I've
staked my future on the clients driving this argument home by requiring
animation and photorealistic renderings. The clients will bring us architects
into the digital age.

Bob, Thank you for the reply, Yes I have all but given up on many of
the larger A&E firms in this area. It seems like the smaller Design
Build Firms are using the technology to take away larger
projects….the sad part of this is I've even attended 8 person
"Board" meetings where everyone literally got up and shouted "We've
Got to Get in to The 20th Century!!!" …. I mean Literally!
Shouted….Then 3 months and 6 meetings later …nothing. It's
almost Laughably Sad..real Pathos! I don't even go to the 2nd or 3rd
meetings anymore…tell em' they know where to find me. Then there's
the two man design shop that takes away business from the 20 man
shop. Guess who's using CAD and Presentation Graphics? Always the
little guy…Always. So that's who I talk to. Makes sense to
me….I'd rather hit the ground running along side of a hungry
startup than play in the tar pits with the Dino's anyday. <BG>
Hmmmmm….I just thought of a great idea for an A&E Promotional
Video….of course the larger firms wouldn't probably "Get it"
anyway.

One farsighted computer advocate at my firm has been claiming, "This
firm is run by some of the finest minds of the 19th century!"
Your marketing strategy of targeting smaller firms is woefully an
excellent one. I'm tiring of teaching the dinosaurs new tricks. I'm
not throwing in the towel yet but the frustration mounts.
I wonder if a strategy to market to A&E firms who use autocad isn't
too limited. I know the marketshare stats and all but I represent
living proof that not all 3ds users are autocad users. Some of the
big names use better cadd 2d software than autocad because for the
money there are several options. However, my 3d research and
experience keep pointing to 3ds as the best for the money.

As soon as I get mine in next week Your first on the list….Let me

And As Soon as the New Eclipse product ships We'll keep copies of that
in stock too….BTW I just got in some copies of 3D Studio Release
3.0 upgrades for 3 of our clients today I hope the rest come in soon

That was exactly our thought process when we started writing our IPAS
image processing routines. We can take a "hard" computer image and
soften it up to make it look like a design sketch, and animate it at
that!
If all goes my way with a recent proposal that I've put forth to my
firm's executive committee I will be taking the firm a needed step
forward in 3d computer applications. If my vision is realized I hope
to acquire at least a few of your IPAS routines.:-] So, if you can
think of any way I can convince my firm to purchase some of the
really cool ones please contact me with some application ideas and
reasons why we should have 'em. Actually, any info on the routines
would be helpful. I'm sure we can think of reasons why we can't live
without them.

On this topic I have been asked several times to soften up a still
image. To accomplish this I find that Photostyler with Gallery
Effects may be a way to do this. I have also found Photoshop with
Kai's Power Tools seems to be another way but I have not found out if
Kai's Power Tools are available for the Windows version of Photoshop.
For that matter I have not seen a review for Photoshop for Windows
yet so I don't know if this is worth the investment. I've got
Photostyler already. Am I close? I would be interested in your
thoughts on image softening and similar special effects.

These, as well as Fractal Painter, are all great tools for 'softening'
single frame computer images. However, they are difficult to use on a large
series of animated images, which is what our IPAS routines are meant to do!

I saw your message to James Murphy and thought I'd answer you directly
and also start a dialog (since I once applied for a job with the
Hillier Group when I first got out of school).
Architectural Power Tools: This is an architectural design and
drafting system that runs inside of AutoCAD. It's a direct competitor
to similar programs from ASG, Softdesk, KETIV, and APdesign. We think
it's a lot easier to learn and use. Its AutoLISP routines and menus
are not encrypted and the software is very well documented.
Facade: This is an architectural modeling program that we are about
to release. We showed it to a very excited group of dealers at CAD
Camp this past August. With Facade, you can quickly sketch a plan in
2D and then create 2D elevations (facades). Then, in a single step,
Facade converts the elevations into a full 3D model. Doors and
windows are controlled using styles in much the same way AutoCAD uses
styles to control the appearance of text. Facade will be released in
a couple of weeks, although it is already available (v1.5) with a
preliminary manual. The suggested retail price is $189 and we will
ship it on every platform that release 12 runs on in a very short
time. Autodesk has seen this product and is very excited about it
because it is the first product that makes it simple to model
architectural projects in 3D. I think our ad says it all: "Can you
draw this in less than 25 minutes?"
While I think your story about Phillip Johnson's office is dead on, I
think this will change dramatically over the next couple of years as
clients become more savy about what capabilities architects "could"
bring to the table. They are going to expect to see photo-realistic
images. They are going to expect to put on goggles and be taken
through a virtual-reality walk-through of a major project. The firms
that realize that this is going to become the norm and begin doing it
now are going to be many steps ahead of their competitors down the
road.
