I uploaded a DMM scene to the Amiga Arts Forum in the 3D directory. I'll upload
more on Monday. If anyone wants it, go ahead and download it and expect more on
Monday.

BTW, the scene was created with two dynamic slabs positioned in LW.
The lower slab has been set to cancel gravity. The higher slab is
affected by gravity. The resulting collision is the result of the
top slab hitting the second one.

I just approved that file to the AmigaArts library. I loaded it into
Lightwave and did a wire frame preview. Looked pretty cool!

Brent, I took the liberty of showing the DMM scenes you had uploaded
to the Amiga Arts forum to Lee Stranahan at a seminar he was teaching
in Hawaii.
He was intrigued with the product, but seemed concerned that it would
be difficult to edit the resulting scene file. Of course, he is an
expert at constructing motion paths "manually". I asked him again at
the end of the day what he thought of DMM, and as I remember, he
said "The results looked good, and the price is right." Just thought
you might appreciate the positive feedback.
Looks like an exciting product. Keep up the good work! By the way,
I'm sure I would be interested in an filter for the DMM which would
reduce the number of key frames generated. Sometimes an
approximation of reality would be preferable to avoid the extra key
frames.

Yeah I got it about 1 hour before going to the meeting, they were
very impress. I can't wait to see the more complicated ones.
How long did it take DMM to calculate this scene? When you u/l the
other scenes could you post the time it took to figure out?
That first scene took about a minute. The one I'm uploading today took
about two minutes. More on the way. I'm glad they liked it!!!
How Complex is the scene you sent up today? I fiddled about with the
"Stone Slabs" one on a Bud's Toaster. BTW please if possible include
a README in the Archive of the Scenes.

One of the scenes I uploaded (DMMJack.lzh) is a bit more complex. It is not
without flaws however. The other scenes (DMMFlub.lzh) are very basic and as for
the flubber, quite silly.
As the week progresses, I will continue to upload better scenes. Anyone wanna
try and top the number of scenes on my hard drive right now?

If I had the software, I'd give it a shot! 🙂 How much is it going to
cost, and when is it going to be ready.
I merged those archives to the AmigaArts libraries last night after I had
a chance to check them at them. Really neat stuff! Is there a limit to
the number of objects in the scene? Have you tried doing a "bowling ball
striking bowling pins" scene yet? How about a swinging chain?

Brent, could you explain how DMM is used?
Does it require a VT/LW in the same machine? Does it directly talk to LW?
Does one make the scene in LW first then load it into DMM for convertion?

Tony,
All that is necessary to run DMM is a LightWave Scene file and the associated
objects. Once loaded into DMM, attributes can be set, and a wire-frame preview
can be viewed. Our preview window is essentially a duplication of LW's,
allowing top, side, front, or perspective viewing. Changes can be made and
viewed again without having to load the scene back into LW.
When you are happy with the scene, it may be saved as a LW scene file, exported
to LW (providing its running), or your work may be saved in our own proprietary
format for later modification. (Along with the scene file, object
characteristics such as mass and elasticity are saved.)
I did upload more scenes, which may have been combined into one larger file. I
seem to remember reading mail from the sysop saying something like that. In any
case, more scenes will be uploaded over the weekend.
I encourage anyone to upload these scenes to other systems like Genie and
Internet. This will save me some time.
As far as the questions go, keep them coming. We've been implementing new
features based on feedback from callers and this forum.

Thanks Brent. I have d/l'ed all the scene files and am eagerly waiting
more. I'll u/l them to local BSSs as well as show them to the local User
group.

Do you have a provision for static and kinetic friction? Can we have
zero gravity?

As for static and kinetic fiction, I don't think they will make it in version
1.0.
Gravity can be entered to any value you like. By default, it is set to the
earth's gravity. (Any object can be omitted from gravity by clicking on a
cancel gravity button.)
There will also be a pull-down menu with gravity for the planets in our
solar-system, or even the moon. Does anyone remember the chart that Spy
magazine ran listing Elvis' weight on the different planets at the time of his
death?

I might be asking the wrong person this, but from the previos post I was
led to believe that you have an interest in the Dynamic Motion Module for
lightwave. If so then a question:
I have a business client that does 3D accident recreation for lawsuits.
Does the dynamic motion module produce accurate enough results that they
will stand up in a court of law as expert testimony? If so, this could
save them alot of time and expense in gettin expert cerifications and I'm
sure they would be most anxious to buy this product.

The use of computer graphics for accident reconstruction is still a pretty
controversial subject. Sometimes it is best used to refute testimony than to
uphold it. For instance, if the defendant claims he was driving at 30 mph at
the time of collision, it would be fairly easy to discount that by running the
numbers through Dynamic Motion Module. If DMM showed the vehicles much closer
than actually happened, it is likely that the defendant was moving faster than
30 mph.
Dynamic Motion Module is as accurate as programs of this nature can be. There
are always some factors that cannot be accounted for, such as the amount of oil
on the surface of an asphalt road due to the abnormally hot sun.
Also, DMM would be best used with data acquired from the experts, such as
engineers and state patrol personnel.
In any case, DMM should easily be more effective than traditional means, such
as chalkboards, or slides. Plus, a printout of the file would show its accuracy
and would stand as accurate based on the factors considered.
The bottom line is, DMM should reduce the work and increase the accuracy of
these simulations.
