#PC286 Problems

Here's hoping someone can figure this out. We have an Amiga 500, with
the A530 Turbo, and we've just installed an upgrade to 4MB RAM and
the PC286 board. We installed DOS 6.0 on the PC section. However,
there seems to be a small problem with DOS. It refuses to accept the
digit "4" as a valid character in any file name. We've been going
nuts trying to unarchive programs packed away on my PC and brought
over to the Amiga via floppies, because LHA chokes whenever it finds
a file name with a "4" in it. What recourse do we have?

Wierd! LHA must have a problem with it. Try another version of Lha, or
another program to unarc the lha archives (I believe there is another one
out there.)

You might try unarchiving the programs with LZ if LHA is choking on
the "4" in the filename(s).
If you need LZ and can't find it here, let me know and I'll post
it and/or CMail it to you.
It's not just LHA that is having trouble with "4". It's all DOS-type
utilities, including COPY, EDIT, and a few select others. If I get a
directory of DIR 44444444.444, it gives me every file on the current
directory. My guess is that DOS is regarding the "4" as a wildcard
character? It won't write to a file with 4 in the file name.

Why not just rename all files with "4" in them to remove the "4"!

Actually, I threw in the towel and rebooted, and though other problems
have now cropped up, at least it won't choke on the 4's.
Even so, renaming would not have done any good: programs expect
their files to be named certain things at times, and it could have
halted certain programs.
Still having problems with the PC286. It does not seem to want to run
certain DOS programs such as EDIT. We have backed out to DOS 5.0 for
the system, because I think DOS 6.0 may be a little too buggy.
We frequently have programs crash and/or fail to load properly.
We have installed a 4MB SIMM in our A530 card. We are at our wit's
end. We need help. –Dave and Nancy
