#Hi Cap Disk Storage

Having just completed a major CD-ROM project which required more that
30 Qic-80 tapes of animations and 3ds maps and files, I never want to
see one of those tapes again. I am beginning my search for a better
solution.
Has anyone found a good solution for handing large amounts of image
files. I have looked at the SYDOS and Bernolie(sp?) systems and find
then still rather small and the disks expensive. (30+ disk=$$$) Is
anyone using an optical solution that works? What are the costs,
and who carries them? Thanks for any suggestions.

Exabyte makes 8mm tape backups that hold 5 gigs per tape. Tape costs
between $9 and $18 per piece. The caveat is the drive itself:
$2400. But it's very fast (backed up 1.1 gigs last night in @ half
hour) and reliable, and you can use ASDG's Abekas drivers to write to
Abekas format hand have service bureaus do D1 transfers to video
tape.
I use a HP DAT drive (up to 8Gig comp. using 90 meters tape). It costs
around $1k. Exabyte has some pretty decent 8mm drives (up to 10Gig
comp.) but they are at the $2.5k ball park. I also use a RICOH
optical disk (1G) but I would not recomend it to any one because it's
too slow. Seagate has just announced a 9G Fast-SCSI II hard disk for
around $3k. That and a DAT unit makes a heck of a deal.
