Since Release 3 came out folks have been chatting here about using multiple machines on a network to do rendering. I have a device I use on my network here that might be a useful tool for this purpose and I thought I would run it by you. I have several communications gateways on my network. That meant my office was buzzing with a small pile of computers piled together. Pretty annoying! I replaced those two units with a QL3000 card by the Cubix Corporation. Each Cubix card contains two complete computers on it and they make a 386 and a 486 version. The card is actually installed in my network server and each processor on the board takes over the role of one of my Gateways. I can hook monitors and keyboards to each processor and have a serial and parallel port available for each one too, or if I want I can use a workstation to control each processor. I haven't gotten my release 3 in the mail yet, but I assume you are offering the "network" rendering as a means of speeding up the rendering process. If that is so would this setup work for people? If it would it would allow someone to essentially setup a server with two 386 or 486 workstations to assist in the rendering without having to go through the hassle of setting up cabling. There is another benefit too. The two processors located on the Cubix board are essentially a seperate segment on the network. If you find that your primary segment is being overwhelmed by the rendering process you could keep the rendering traffic off that segment by using this card.
