#Small R3 bugs.

Well, I have a Micronics 486-66 VL bus mb. Hercules Graphite 2Meg
VLB. 64meg ram Always SCSI adapter. It has no ram shadowing (or any
fancy CMOS settings). It crashes with or without QEMM, even if the
only driver running is Hercules' VESA driver (latest version.)
Trouble is it takes a while to try out a new configuation because the
crashes are intermitant and sometimes hours apart (sometimes
minutes.)
Well, I can guarantee you that it's not 3DS, and that it's _something_
that's going on in your particular configuration. You can try
replacing the Herc card with a stock VGA card and see if that does
it. Also, are you experiencing these problems after creating a swap
file?
Well, I'm glad to hear that my problem is not from 3DS, though it does
a good job of revealing it <g>. 3DS is the only program that I have
trouble with (in fact, 3DS2 did not display this trouble.)
I'll try replacing the Herc card when I can afford to have my computer
out of commission for a while. I hate messing with the hardware,
some hard-to-solve problem always precedes an emergency job!
Swap file? What swap file? I think some swap file parameter thingies
were setup during installation (drive d:) but I haven't done anything
withy them since. I have 64meg of ram so the computer rarely swaps
to disk anyway.
I doubt that you've got any other applications that use Phar Lap 5.0.
3DSr2 used Phar lap 2.6, and they're completely different. PL5.0 is
actually more rigorous than 2.6 was due to it's need to be DPMI and
VCPI-compliant simultaneously. That's the price you pay for Windows
compatibility in Phar Lap land.
Maybe some day we'll get a real (32 bit) operating system and we won't
have to jump through so many hoops. Or will we be jumping though
64bit hoops in a 32 bit OS <g>?
Ian, I know Greg Pyros uses Hercules Graphite cards in every one of
his machines (20 or so) and has no problems. Perhaps there is
something else buggering Pharlap. I'll agree, though, pharlap sure
is fickle these days. Took me some time to get things running
trouble free.

Actually, we only have five Graphites, we need to keep a stable of
the others also to support our clients who have other cards. It is,
however, my personal favorite due to it's speed and the drivers
available for it.
I may have it. I relaces the Herc card to test it with my old ATI VGA
Wonder (which worked.) when I replaced the Graphite I straightened
out a couple of chokes on the board that looked a bit askew, and I
haven't had a crash since! Well yet… I don't like to speak to soon
when dealing with intermitant problems.

BOY do I know how that goes! Glad you've got it straightened out for
now.
Durn! I DID speak too soon! The bug is back…well, just have to save
often I suppose.
AAAAAaaaarrrrggghhhh!!!!! Sorry to hear the bug is back.

People are having a problem with the Herc Graphite? Ours are running
without a hitch with r3
Have you had any luck running 3DS r3 under Windows using the
Graphite? I haven't been able to get them to work correctly
yet…they work great running under DOS; if you have any tricks for
running under Windows, (memory exclusions, etc.), it would be much
appreciated.
John,
>> running under Windows
No .. I havn't tried it .. and honestly probably won't. We have enough systems
around that it doesn't make sence to take the performance hits. I will
probably investigate it a little just for customer support sake.
Do you have the latest drivers for the Graphite? (2.1 I think)
