SCSI message question

I've got a GVP Combo/040 board in my A2000 and I recently had to replace a
failed Quantum LP105S drive. I installed a Maxtor 7345S drive as a replacment
and I'm running into some problems. 1) It seems like the drive needs to warm
up before it operates properly – when I first turn the system on I often get a
number of read errors on blocks which disappear after the system has been on
for a few minutes. 2) Related to that, what does the message "Unexpected
Result $49/$46" mean from the GVP SCSI controller? I know that the drive
problems aren't your business, but have you had reports of other problems with
this combo? Is there a problem with this combination, or just this drive. I
also have a Toshiba XM3201 CD-ROM drive and a Syquest SQ555 drive on the SCSI
bus.

You may have to change the "power-up option" jumper on the Maxtor. I do not
have specifications on that drive, so I cannot tell you precisely which jumper
that is. In regard to the error message ("Unexpected …"), the AmigaDOS
requester that appears will display a UNIT NUMBER or a BOARD NUMBER. This
tells us what specific drive (or board — most often the drive) is having a
problem. Next time that error appears, look at the UNIT NUMBER and find the
corresponding SCSI device. You may have to change a setting in FAAASTPREP
(such as Disconnect, etc.).

Thanks for the reply. The message was coming from SCSI device 0,
which was the Maxtor drive. After reconfiguring the drive chain, I'm
not encountering the problem. I WAS wondering what the $49/$46
message meant.
