I have a fried at work who is interested in developing "plug ins" for
3D Studio. The manual says to contact the Sysop in the Autodesk
forum on CompuServe. Please send me information on obtaining the
necessary tools/documentation for this.

The documentation should be available from 800/879-4233.
The plug-in modules you refer to are IPAS routines from several different
vendors, and are not sold through Autodesk. I know there are a couple of IPAS
routines here in our Libraries that you can download or read about.
Three (or 4?) companies which make IPAS routines that I know about:
YOST Group: "IPAS Boutique" 800/POV-IPAS

I'm changing your message thread a little by listing these companies, but I
wanted to let others (the "lurkers") know that these were available. There may
be other products listed in my information at work (I'm at home) so this is not
likely to be a complete list.
