I have a question for all you amiga gods out there… I have an amiga 2000,
with an 030 accelerator.. and like 2.04 dos.. What I want to do it put a
picture in as the background for my workbench. are there any programs around to
do this? or am I missing something in my tools box on the HD?? Thanks much!!

Since ouy only have 2.04 you can do that with a third party hack called
NickPrefs — it is available in AmigaUser Forum. Versions 2.1 thru 3.1 of
the OS have user selectable background pics as a standard feature.

Only 3.0 and 3.1 can show pics. 2.1 has patterns only.

Ah, ok, thanks. I haven't used 2.1 in a long time … thought it has the
background pic feature also.
Nah, they had to save something for 3.1 🙂 I just upgraded from 2.1 to
3.1, and that was one of the first things I noticed, so it was fresh in my
normally short-spanned memory <g>.

2.1 directly offers patterns only, but by using the pd utility WDisplay
along with Nickprefs you can load up background pics. I've got the United
Federation of Planets logo in 8 colors as my 2.1 backdrop today.

I've got the Window's logo (tiled) on a grey marble background on mine
today (looks neat :).

Yeah, I did use Nickprefs for a bit, but I heard some nasty things about
it, like private Intuition structures being poked to death <g>.

if you download NickPrefs, you may be interested in my Workbench backdrop…
the classic Jim Sachs image of an Amiga keyboard, cut away to reveal chips and
resistors, and a big boing ball on top. I used Imagemaster to dither and remap
the image to 16-color hi-res interlace, while keeping the first 4 colors
intact. (They are used by system software; for example, standard Workbench
icons use those colors)
I'm uploading it to AmigaArts in library 8, as WBBALL.pic (Workbench ball).
Look for it in a couple of days when it clears the sysops.
