What is the best method to determine the orientation of an object's local axis?
I ask this question because it seems that when using IK axis orientation can
easily get changed and cause problems.

Hierarchy/Object Pivot in the keyframer gives you a consistant reference.
Turning on the axis display while in interactive mode of IK will also display
the axis. I use these 2 techniques.
