Garry, what version of ProWrite do you use? In version 3.0 and up (I use V 3.3), you have to set the printer density within PW, as it takes precedence over the Preferences settings. (It's in the Page Setup menuitem, just above the Print menuitem.) I get some really, really good-looking output from PW 3.3 with our HP DeskJet 520, although there is sometimes a little "glitch," a vertical line where a few pixels are squeezed together at the highest density, but it's usually not noticeable unless you look very closely. As to printer drivers, there are a few in the library here. Robert Shimbo (70260,231) posted "DJ500C.LZH" (4506 bytes) which has no graphics compression or offset compensation (for ProPage). He may have a more recent version, you should email him (hope he's still here — this file was uploaded in December of '91). For black & greyscale, I recommend "DJ500.LZH" (7535 bytes) by Lance Kibblewhite (lkibblewhite@bix.com). It does include graphics compression and optional offset compensation. If you set the print density to 5, 6 or 7, it offsets to work with ProPage. Settings of 1 through 4 do not. It is _much_ faster than the Workbench HP_DeskJet driver. (The 500C driver _should_ work for the 550C, no?) In the doc file, Kibblewhite recommends, when using Excellence! that you set SCALE=72 (I assume in Preferences) and INTEGER scaling with appropriate values in the Bounds section. Hope these help.
