I missed the parent to your message to Dan Stets, but I own (a copy)
VoRecOne. It was published by Impulse (the Imagine people). While it is
still somewhat supported there has been no updates in quite some time.
The copy I have is for sale, if interested, it is hardware/software combo
that I would take around $50 or so.

How well does it work. My colleague has dozens of taped interviews.
Instead of transcribing them, he would like to find a software program that
would do it for him. It might be adequate even if it only functions crudely.
That would allow him to scan the text and then go back to what looks
interesting. Where is the publisher based?

Dan,
VoRecOne was published by Impulse (they are in AmigaVendor) about 3
years ago. I do not believe it is availbel anymore. I got the package on
impulse (pun intended!), it sounded cool and was around $150. It comes as
a hardware software combo, the hardware plugs into the right
mouse/joystick port and a microphone (included) plugs into that. The
software requires `training' to recognize your voice. It is more command
oriented than for dictation. ie speak "Shell" and it opens a shell, speak
"SuperBase, file Invoices, record, new" would load superbase, open the
invoices file, give you a blank form (or ony particular form you may tell
it to). The programming language is pretty in depth, but I did not spend
the time with it to really know its capabilites.

VOREC will not do what you have in mind. Do you remember the famous
"Clapper" advertised on TV a few years back. You plugged it into the wall
socket and connected a light or what have you to it. Clap your hands …
lights on. Clap them again….lights off. Well, Vorec One is kind of a
clapper for the Amiga. Instead of turning on lights, it starts up tasks.
It's recognition isn't really that hot.
I'm not really trying to bad rap it; I love my Amiga toys and have had
alot of fun with this one. Currently I have it hooked up to accept input
from my two year old son's gizmo that generates four different sounds. One
sound triggers an audio visual alphabet and number tutor, another produces
a slide show of family and friends and a third plays midi files. Haven't
had time to put anything together for the last sound but I'm thinking
about a slide show of trains and heavy equiptment….he's really into that
stuff. There really are alot of cool things you can do with this but
transcribing audio to text is a little beyond its capacity.

The VoRecOne won't even come close to doing what your friend would like to
do with it. It has to be trained by the person who is trying to use it,
and it would take a *really* long time to get it to function even very
very very crudely. It's a neat little toy for what it does though. Too
bad Impulse never came out with any updates for it.
