#Need help with printer

O.K., I'll try to be more specific. The word processor I'm using,
excellence! 3.0, allows selection of the internal printer font, or so it
says. The manual states that this is done by sending FON# codes to the
printer. However, selecting different font numbers have no effect
whatsoever, with the printer using the default font regardless of setting,
at least when using a laserjet 2P or 4P. Now, using Word Perfect, with
its own printer drivers, the fonts CAN be changed by changing the font
numbers just as they should be. The assumption I therefore make is that
the preferences Laserjet driver is not correctly transmitting the FON#
information. I'm trying to confirm that, and wondering if the printer
drivers in Studio would give better results. The alternative is that
excellence! is slightly broken, which I can't do anything about.
What really bothers me is that even the front panel settings (for the
default font) on the 4P seem to be overridden by whatever is being sent
from excellence!, so I can't get the silly thing to print anything but
courier.

Yep, it's the aFNT0 – aFNT10 you can set in Excellence! – not FON#. The
stuff does work, however, the Commodore driver is very limited and doesn't
allow you to select all fonts. All aFNT typefaces can be defined in
Studio. However, you allways have to remember, that the printer does
select a font by a list of attributes (width, height, landscape…) in a
defined priority. The typeface is pretty low in priority.
For instance: let say, you want to select the Times font of the printer.
After using the proper aFNT command, the printer still doesn't print
Times. Why? Because your printer was using a mono spaced font (Courier?)
and Times is proportional spaced. Now spacing has a higher priority in the
printer than typeface and thus, you typeface Times is selected. If you
follow the rules… the stuff will work (however, the Commodore driver
doesn't allow you to select all HP printer fonts… hmm if I remember
right, only 3 of the 11 aFNT commands are supported by standard HP
printers).
Here the list of priorities according to the HP manual:
– Orientation
– Character set (Commodore HP Laserjet allways uses Roman)
– Proportional spacing versus fixed spacing
– Print pitch (for non-proportional fonts only)
– Character height (point size)
– Character style (upright versus italic)
– Stroke weight (medium, bold)
– Family (Typeface)
– Quality (draft, letter)

It sounds like I need to get Studio, then. You said earlier that a new
version is coming out?

Yep, a new version is coming up soon. The software (3 compressed disks) is in
it's final test phase and I'm currently working on the manual wich should be
finished in 2 weeks. Add another week for my printer… so it should ship in
3-4 weeks. If everything goes worse… it might be another 1-2 weeks… but I
don't think there are any major time changes yet… I will write some info
about the new features as soon as I can find some hours free time…
