Yep, it's the aFNT0 – aFNT10 you can set in Excellence! – not FON#. The stuff does work, however, the Commodore driver is very limited and doesn't allow you to select all fonts. All aFNT typefaces can be defined in Studio. However, you allways have to remember, that the printer does select a font by a list of attributes (width, height, landscape…) in a defined priority. The typeface is pretty low in priority. For instance: let say, you want to select the Times font of the printer. After using the proper aFNT command, the printer still doesn't print Times. Why? Because your printer was using a mono spaced font (Courier?) and Times is proportional spaced. Now spacing has a higher priority in the printer than typeface and thus, you typeface Times is selected. If you follow the rules… the stuff will work (however, the Commodore driver doesn't allow you to select all HP printer fonts… hmm if I remember right, only 3 of the 11 aFNT commands are supported by standard HP printers).
