Does anyone have an idea how I would go about animating the sand kicking up from a tank driving along a sand dune.. I tried unseccessfully useing the Magic IPAS… it seems that it would be the most appropriate.. I am haveing difficulty getting it to leave trails.. I end up with what looks like a dust geyser following my tank without eny sand being left behind.. Is there some other IPAS i could buy that is more suited to this sort of thing?? Any comments & OR suggestions would be appreciated. Tim Stewart

Tim, How about Yost's Snow IPAS? It will fill a volume. I don't know if you can control it well enough though but it may be worth looking into. Dave Mennenoh

Thankyou Dave, I'll give it a go!

I've seen a very convincing "sand in an hourglass" effect using, of all things, the bubble ipas from Digimation. The bounding box was turned upside down, and a sand texture was mapped to the bubbles. It was pretty involved, but the effect was very realistic. Unfortunately, it was too subtle for the client to see – but it was a fun exercise! bob

Tim, The Imagine FX set of routines from Schreiber might have something that will help you. One of the things they did with it, (I've seen the video), is to simulate sawdust flying off the blade of a table saw as a piece of wood is pushed through. I'm not sure which modules of the FX routines were used, but it really gave the desired effect, and it sounds very similar to what you're trying to achieve. John

I would like to know which routine it is, but I guess if I call Schreiber they could tell me.. I really thought The MAGIC IPAS from Digimation could do it though, but I don't seem to be able to make it leave trails that slowly die, instead my MAGIC fountain just moves with the tank… It's really pretty funny looking! Thanx John… I'll give 'em a call.

Tim, You may need to use a series of fountains or smoke plumes with a fast rise and a slow fall and decay. You would need to set up the plume series so that each plume starts when the vehicle passes overhead. A plume would rise quickly and then slowly fade and the particles sink. If you wanted to have a track in the sand remain after the vehicle passes you whould probably want to use an animated bump map on the ground plane. Does this sound like the effect you are looking for? Terry Gilbert Forcade & Associates

Have you tried the animated dust particle routine available from schreiber. A series of these clouds may give the effect you want. Jinx
