Hi, On the IBC-fair in Amsterdam last week i saw a softwarepackage called "RAZOR" (or something like it) with it you could edit the PAR-files from almost every point of view and i think it was a WINDOWS application. Does somebody have some information about this software, maybe it is something everybody was waiting for. THANX THEO

RAZOR is by in:sync. They advertise in New Media, Digital Video as well as about 8 other magazines. You might try getting in touch with our UK office in about a week. They should know more about RAZOR availability in europe at that time. Brick

RAZOR is like Premiere, but thats like saying TOPAS is like 3D STUDIO (wearing flame proof suit).. They are the same type of product but they take different approaches. RAZOR is a timeline based editor that works natively with minatures (AVI/INDEO/CINEPAK/etc) for its preview editing. Think of it as an offline editor. I am going to describe the currently available versions of RAZOR and PREMIERE because that is what is available today. Both programs use miniature avi type files to represent a video stream which might live on another device, or might be just another AVI file. Traditionally the way these programs work is that each AVI file shows up as some kind of minature filmstrip on a timeline. You slide multiple filmstrips around on the timeline, adding dropin transistions and effects between them to simulate what a real edit might look like. They give you the ability to preview the final cut complete with transistions and effects, then you commit to the real thing by selecting "make movie" or something like that. The programs will then go out and really work with the original source material. Thats what makes these systems offline. You sample the original down to AVI, edit it, preview it, then commit the edits to the real material. The programs use the timelines as an edit decision list and create your full scale (or miniature) animation frames or image sequences. In short, useing these programs you can treat the PAR like a non-linear editor. But offline. Now, that is what is available today (with only slight jumping through hoops). What will be available in the future (very near future)…. well, we will just have to wait for COMDEX to see whats coming. Brick

Hi Theo, Have you got a par drive for PAL .. if so I would very much like to discuss your experience with it. Regards Richard

Richard, I think it is one of the most cost/effective solutions to get to broadcastquality output. I'm really very satified with the products also the Video In is high quality. I found out that it is very important to choose the right harddisk (as big as possible) because using the difficult tracks drops the overall quality. I use a MicroPolis 2217A 1.6 GB now, but i hope in the near future a even bigger one is available. Because i hate to backup the data everytime. The sofware which came with the PAR is simple but very efficient, and there is going to come some real nice stuff like RAZOR which i saw on the IBC in Amsterdam. So this is my general opinion about it but please shoot your specific questions. Theo

I was wondering if I could have your phone number so that I can call you for a few pointers on the par with 2217a, which I purchased yesterday. It all seems to be working fine its just that having rendered alot of my recent work to flics for architechtural walkthroughs, my camera movements are shot (inapropriate) for the par capability .. also this question of using fields is confusing me a little .. anyway it would be nice to talk Richard

Richard, No problem my Phonenumber is Holland-35563797 (company) 3583674 (private) 3556402 (fax) The problems you have, i think have something to do with the aspect ratios going from FLIC-format to PAL-formats. I never use existing flics, i really render them all over again at the right aspect ratios, the rest goes auto i think it gives me pixelsize 1.23 and aspect ratio 0. But i have to check this out at home. Waiting for your call ! Theo
