I've been dreading asking this question for half a day now. I've got a black tire which will roll thru a scene which is a perspective matched background. I want the tire to cast a shadow onto the background (give the appearance of actually). I've got a floor plane for the tire shadow to cast onto and can get just fine shadows on it but how can I key out the tire and its shadow to composite over my background. I know I'm missing something painfully obviouos here and will be red in the face when I see it, but I'm totally clueless today. Why can't a matte object receive shadows if we want it to…… That'd be cool hu hu hu hu.

Erik, use a pure blue (or any unnatural colour) material with maybe 25% self illumination for the ground plane. Make the spotlight pure white 3x multiplier. Turn off dither 24-bit before rendering. That should make sure you get a consistent pure blue to key out and retain the shadow for composition in Video Post. For a more complete discussion and elaborate tutorial of this technique get a hold of NRP's "3d Studio: Special Effects" – should be worth it's weight in Pentium CPU's <g>. Oh, and BTW dude, I was a co-author and originator of that chapter …. cool hu hu hu hu hu <g>.

Martin, I went to my neighborhood Barnes and Noble yesterday to pick up a copy of "3D Studio: Special Effects" and they don't have it yet:(…what a disappointment, I've been looking forward to sinking my teeth! What's the deal? Regards, Connie

Connie, >> Barnes and Noble ….. "3D Studio: Special Effects" and they don't have it yet … What's the deal? << Beat's me! I have nothing to do with that end of the business. You can put an order in for it though, and get it when the first copies ship. The ISBN is 1-56205-303-5. I suggest you contact New Riders Publishing directly to ensure a copy.
