I want to buy a laser printer for DTP with the Amiga. It should not cost more than $1200. Currently I would prefer the HP 4P laser printer which I can buy for $1050, but I am not sure if it is the right one. I want to: -print with 600*600 dpi DINA 4 full page. Is 2 MB printer memory enough ? I dont think so. -the printer should be able to print the page from the printers memory, because I need this page more than once( 4 pages/per minute). -print on one day more than 1000 pages (heat problems etc.). -to be able to connect it to an other computer too, lets say a Mac. -know if Postscript is very useful (HP 4MP). The printer has to be reliable, I dont need the newest stuff. I know only the price of the the HP 4P. What costs the 4MP, 4, 4Plus etc. ? Any answer is appreciated. -Franz flying from Aying(Germany) with Amiga 1200`030 & Autopilot flying from Aying(Germany) with Amiga 1200`030 & Autopilot

1000 pages a day sounds high for the 'P' or 'L' series. I think they are rated for much less. The small toner catridge, for example, is only good for an average of 3000 pages. It'd be more economical to use the larger toner cartridges in a 4 or 4M. A 4M+ (the latest model) is about $1800. It prints 12ppm and has PostScript and Ethernet. I think you could get a 4M discouted to about $1400 at this point (which is what I paid for my 4MP in December). I haven't checked on the 4M, though, so you'll need to ask around. PostScript is VERY useful. On the Amiga, it makes all the difference in the world about print speed — much Amiga software knows how to print direct to PS, but otherwise generates a bit map and sends that to the printer (painfully slowly). At 600dpi, bitmaps are intolerably slow. BTW, you mentioned that you wanted to print the same page more than once. It is much more economical to use a photocopier for copies than to use your laser printer to make copies.

Thanks for the information Dale. Here in Germany the HP 4 Plus costs $1900, I dont know the price of the HP 4M Plus. I think that I will buy the PostScript version, because of the print speed. The HP 4 costs $1400, but has no PostScript. I would like to use the laser printer as a photocopier, because the old photocopier of the company I work is really slow and the quality is not the best. I will have to print between 1000 and 10000 pages next week. Until know I dont know the exact number and when I can start printing. I think that I can start printing on Wensday (I hope), but I am not sure. Normally I would go to a printing office, but they can not do the job until Friday. That is the reason why I need a laser printer. One possibility would be to go to the printing-shop and use their photocopiers to get a good quality, which would be not very cheap. Do you agree that a HP 4MP(4ppm) and a fast photocopier with good quality printouts or a HP 4M Plus(12 ppm) would be the best solution ? -Franz flying from Aying(Germany) with Amiga 1200`030 & Autopilot
