Can any one explain to me the difference between JPEG and MPEG other than the
fact that they are both compression formats?
I believe JPEG is mainly for stills and MPEG for multiple frame oriented
stuff. Extrapolating, MPEG may use difference between frames, etc. I may
be wrong …

Well, JPEG was intended to be a compression method that will allow to compress
the heck out of a picture without much lost, I believe from around 2:1 is
lossless and anything above 35:1 is usually lossy. 100:1 can be achieve but
the picture will lose much quality, definition, color, etc..
Then MPEG was a similar idea but adding motion and sound to the equation. MPEG
I beleive tried to accomodate the current CD ROM transfer rate as part of the
format (so movies could be played using CD's).
But since sound is a tiny bit of the storage problem in motion. Enter the real
bright engineers from various companies that created a format M-JPEG or Motion
JPeg. Since all an animation is a bucnh of pictures shown one after the other.
Several manufacturer created boards that compress and/or decompress JPeg images
at 30 to 60 frames per second (nifty eh?).
There are a bunch of other lossy formats in both still and motion. These
happen to be standards.

JPEG is a lossy image compression format. What this means is that in all
commercial JPEG implmentations there is some loss of color in the image when
it is compressed to be stored as JPEG. This color loss allows the image to
to reach much higher compression levels. The color loss starts with colors
the human eye does not perceive well, so with a higher quality setting you
will rarely notice the change. JPEG was designed for photorealistic images
and is not as good for line art images.
MPEG was designed for video. It is usually limited to lower resolution images
and achieves its compression using methods similar to JPEG (but faster versions
so full motion is possible) and also incorporates compression methods based on
similarities to frames before and after the current frame. MPEG also includes
standards for incorporating sound into an MPEG file.

Very similar. JPEG was intended for stills and MPEG for movies. JPEG can
and is being used for movies and in some ways is better, because it
retains individual frame information and can be edited very readily. MPEG
is better as a playback system than an editing system. MPEG is really an
umbrella standard. Within it is MPEG-1 (which most desktops use) and the
still-in-the-works MPEG-2, meant for the higher end, like digital
broadcasts.
The acronyms stand (as I dimly recall) for Joint Photo Experts Group and
Movie Photo Experts Group, the industry teams developing the standards.
