Very similar. JPEG was intended for stills and MPEG for movies. JPEG can and is being used for movies and in some ways is better, because it retains individual frame information and can be edited very readily. MPEG is better as a playback system than an editing system. MPEG is really an umbrella standard. Within it is MPEG-1 (which most desktops use) and the still-in-the-works MPEG-2, meant for the higher end, like digital broadcasts. The acronyms stand (as I dimly recall) for Joint Photo Experts Group and Movie Photo Experts Group, the industry teams developing the standards.
