#Silicon Garden R4?
11 messages in this thread
Gary,
1.) Will any of R4's new features enhance R2/R3's Silicon Garden IPAS?
2.) Are there plans for an R4 version of Silicon Garden? (If you're worried
about advance info…etc., I promise to keep quiet!<g>)
Thanks,
Paul D. Sanford [LEVEL 5]
We're too busy working on future product development to upgrade any of our
pre-existing IPAS routines.

I think many of these routines have serious potential for growth. Just out of
curiosity, has the YG ever considered selling the rights to, or subcontracting
further development of, your earlier IPAS routines?

At the moment, we're just too busy. But we've got ideas re how to upgrade some
of those routines in the future. (we've got a lot of patience)

I too am worried about your last post. Could Autodesk people fill in
the gaps?
I don't know what you should be worried about. I've regularly updated
our IPAS routines when we've had a bug or have had the need to
increase performance. Sometimes those updates have been available
from Schreiber via their BBS (in the case of Disk1, Disk4 and Disk5)
and sometimes I've proactively sent disks out to everyone who bought
them (Disk6). That's indicative of my level of concern that everyone
has the code they need to handle their production requirements.
I feel that the Ipazs are a one time shot unless the Ipaz has a bug. a
good example is lens flare, the quality of this Ipaz has not been
upgraded. only gama and network changes. Now if I want a lens flare
that looks good do I get it from a new company and pay another 300.00
for a total of 600.00? I think that ugrades are inportant in quality
too. Some thinking is that the companys are not makeing much on
selling Ipaz so why inprove it. If I count the Ipaz that I have
recommend to companys it add up to a lot of cash.
You didn't pay $300 for lens flare — you paid $50 (there are 6 routines on
Disk#1).
Would you rather Gary said "Okay, the next release of 3DS will be pushed back
6-12 months while we add nifty features to all our old IPAS's…."?
Gary did say in another message that unless someone else came out with a better
lens flare, that they would have to beef up theirs — but I wouldn't expect
this until after r5. I do agree that maybe the thing to do is to contract with
to someone to upgrade the routines — that way they'd a) have time and b) have
access to info from the Yosts. Maybe some of the guys who Adesk got to do the
r4 plug-ins.
Still, for my money, I'd rather have Gary/Jack/Darrel/Jeff/Rolf/Tom/Dan working
on the core 3DS code.

I strongly agree here. There are certain limitations to group
technology: one being that, with a group of more than six people,
communication begins to break down; another being that six people can
only code a limmited number of lines per day. Hence, I can see that
YG will have to focus their efforts continuously on 3DS core
development, which I fully support.
Since this is the case, IPAS development will always be a secondary
priority, excepting extreme cases (bug fixes, etc.). This leaves
future development of these wonderfull applets begging. I agree that
contracting is probably a good alternative — maybe a sister
company: the Yost Plug-In Group. 🙂
was it you who was collecting for the asoft regulars photo yearbook? I
have some recent photos now on photo-cd. What's the guidlines?
Resolution, standards of decency etc.

Yes, indeed! Minimum requirements are: 160x120x8bpp with a 1.0 aspect.
Larger size and bit depth is better (preferably 320x240x24bpp). Any 3DS
supported raster format is acceptable. As far as decencey goes, as long as
your face is recognizable, anything goes. 😉
