I am putting together a proposal for a new business and have some
questions regarding the r3/r4 changeover and development kits:
1. Are new versions of the Plug-in and File Toolkits going to be released for
release 4 of 3ds?
2. If so, how will the upgrade be handled – how much is it going to cost me and
how much of a change will occur?
3. Is Watcom 10 supported now? In the future?
Also, if any of you could voice your opinions on the following video cards, I
would surely appreciate it…
ATI Mach 64 w/4MB, PCI – I have heard lots of moaning about this one
Diamond Stealth 64 w/4MB, PCI – diamond?!
#9GXE64 Pro w/4MB, PCI – dark horse candidate?
Matrox w/4MB, PCI – looks good, but what about speed in DOS?
I am looking for something with excellent performance in DOS and Windows, and
don't want to spend the rest of my life searching for driver updates. I will be
installing them in P90s with 32 megs of ram.
Any recommendations on nice, normal 2meg super VGA cards?

IPAS4 will be released soon after R4 is released. There is no need to
upgrade the 3DS File ToolKit.

Depends if you are a registered developer with Autodesk and when you
purchased your original copy. We'll post details on this as we get
closer to release.

This has been a frequesnt request but nothing has been publically
announced.

from eaves-dropping on the forum and on friends with these cards I
think these 2 may be good choices. I've friends who is very happy
with the Stealth 64 in Dos and Windows.

The Diamond and the #9 both use the S3 964 chipset; very nice. I just put the
4meg #9GXE64Pro in my system and am *very* happy with it. (They also make this
card in a 2meg version.) Its VESA mode under DOS is one of the fastest. The
Matrox is very slow in VESA mode DOS; you probably don't want it if you are
going to be playing flics from a VESA based player. I've heard of problems with
the ATI drivers myself.
If you get the #9, there is a utility for setting refresh rates in DOS that
isn't mentioned anywhere in their docs. It's on one of the floppies, and it's
called 64REFRSH.EXE. When you run this, it will put a command in the
autoexec.bat file to correctly set the refresh rates for your particular
monitor. The latest Windows drivers from their BBS fixed a small glitch I was
experiencing with the shipping version. Get in touch if you have any more
