Betty, I made a backup copy of my Install disk. I couldn't get the INFO on my
real Install disk because I kept getting the request to put my Workbench disk
back into the drive and then all the INFO told about my Workbench disk. I then
tried to use my new backup copy of Install and got this error
message–GETENV:STRING TOO LONG (Gets the value of a global variable) I didn't
try renaming my original Install disk because I didn't want to risk it.
Joan, just another small thing that will go away after you get your hard disk
back into the stream.
When you're working on floppy disks only (especially a Workbench on floppy),
there are several ways go get around that confusing surrounding "Please put
your Workbench disk back in", thus confusing what DF0: means. Let me give you
a couple:
1. (Easiest, but not the fastest). Command "INFO ?" .. your INFO command
isn't complete, but you'll finish it in a moment. You'll be asked to put your
Workbench disk back in; do so, and you'll get back a long line ("a template").
Put back the disk you want to get INFO on, and THEN complete your INFO command
by typing DF0: .. you'll get the information.
2. (Fastest, but uses a little memory. What the heck, you have 2 megabytes).
Put the workbench disk into the drive and then command;
RESIDENT C:INFO
Command INFO will be placed into a RAM area; when you use command INFO, you
won't be asked for the Workbench disk. By the way, you probably already have
quite a few commands stored this way: try typing RESIDENT and see the names of
these commands. If you have any other favorite commands, you can make them
resident the same way.
