#TPaint

John,
If experience is the best teacher then I should be very smart after working
with files and the Toaster. However, something came up today that I just don't
understand.
I was trying to pull a file of clip art into Toaster Paint. The file came from
a BMP file off of a PC. I was able to pull it into AD Pro. I then scaled it and
reduced it in size. It looked fine in AD Pro. I then saved it as a Framestore
in the Framestore directory. Giving it the proper number and name. I also saved
it in the same directory as an IFF file.
When I went back into the Toaster, I checked the file listing and found the
framestore number and file name listed. I then went into TPaint and tried to
pull it in as LOAD FRAME. However, when I went into the directory, the number
and name of the file was not there. It showed up in the Switcher directory but
not in the TPaint directory.
This was the second file that I had transfered this way. The first file was
fine. Both files started out as CGM files and were pulled into HIJACK on our
PC. However, the first file was a 4 bit file whereas the second was an 8 bit.
Both files were converted by HIJACK into BMP files.
After spending two hours trying all kinds of different saves, I finally went
back to the original CGM file and used a different one that was a 4 bit file.
This time it work.
The files that worked came from a program called Task Force. The file that did
not work came from Corell Draw. Any idea why a file would not show up in the
TPaint directory buy did show up in the Switcher directory?

PMFJI: All I can suggest is to convert your Images to 24 bit RGB format
first when utilizing TPaint. You can then save out as a FrameStore from
TPaint when you're finished.
As yo your problem, I can't figure out why it wouldn't show up in the
TPaint requester, assuming you are looking at the FrameStore directory in
TPaint.
BTW, we have successfully converted lots of images from Corel. Keep in
mind that ADPro can't deal with the internal .CDR Corel files, but if you
save out the Corel drawing in TIFF, or some other ADPro-supported format,
you'll be okay. Another thing to watch is the pixel resolution. Corel
can easily export very large bitmaps which will choke in ADPro unless you
have lots of RAM. For example, I tried to use a PCX 2-color image in
ADPro. It had been saved out as PCX from Corel, but in around 2200 x 2000
pixel resolution. ADPro reported it needed over 17 MB RAM to process the
image. If you start out keeping the res to near video (752 x 480), you'll
be okay.

I recall a bug in the TPaint file requesters where it truncated listings
of directories which it arbitrarily considered over-full.
Also, I advise anyone transferring graphics to avoid the framestore
format unless they are using the graphics for a switcher-based
presentation. The framestore loads faster than an RGB image, but
converting to the framestore is essentially encoding your RGB into NTSC
composite, with an unaviodable and irreversible loss of quality.
I can never remember pixel aspect details, but if your PC graphic is
640×480 and fills the screen, you want to stretch it to 752×480 to fill
the Toaster video screen.
