#Mac/Amiga compatible?
9 messages in this thread
Dear All;
My brother has an Amiga 2000 that he inherited from my father – who purchased
it when that model first came out. The system software has not been upgraded
since then, I'm pretty sure. Dad's like that.
I know the Amiga community is still very active and the system and utilities
have been upgraded numerous times. The brother, to whom I refer, does not have
a modem. I believe he could benefit from files that I could retrieve through
CIS. I used to have the ability to format floppies for Amiga DOS, but can no
longer do so.
Question is: (FINALLY!!) Is there a tool, and where would I find it, that would
give me back that ability to format floppies that he could use on his Amiga??
Please R.S.V.P. – A.S.A.P.

I think, your brother should first upgrade the AmigaDOS to at least 2.05 or
perhaps to 3.1 to have a plenty of tools coming with the system software. With
that software he gets a tool caled CrossDOS, which gives him the possibility to
read/write DD/HD PC disks (depending on the floppy drive built in – DD or HD).
You already have that ability on your mac, I think. So you should than be able
to transfer the programs.
BTW, if your brother does NOT upgrade his AmigaDOS, he will surely get some
problems running newer programs, because most of them NEED at least
Workbench/Kickstart 2.0 or higher!
Rob.
There is no utility that can write Amiga disks on a Mac.
There are two utilities, MaxDOS and CrossMAC, which you can get at a dealer or
mail order. They can get the Amiga to read Mac disks on the Amiga, but you'll
need more hardware. The January issue of AmigaWorld has details about the
hardware you might need to get.
A better solution is to get a utility for the Amiga that can write IBM style
disks (like CrossDOS [commercial] or MessyDOS [in our library]), and write them
in IBM low density format on your Mac.

Steve,
I've just been asking these questions and here are the answers. Ironic. The
one problem I've got is how to get a copy of messyDOS from my Mac to a clients
Amiga who hasn't got a modem? Ideas?
TIA
Peter
Does the client have the latest version of the Amiga system software? If so,
then you'll be able to give them the PC floppy because he has the software
already built in.
If the client doesn't, I recommend setting up your Mac and the Amiga together,
connecting them with a null modem cable, and do a file transfer that way, using
comm programs on both sides.
Steve
An easier way would be to connect the modem to the Amiga and then d/l the file
directly to the Amiga.
Rob.
Assuming that it's an external modem, that'll work just fine.
Steve
WOW ! It's great that someones talking the talk Ive been needing to hear. I
have an Amiga 2000 2.04 and would like to transfer some spreadsheet files to my
Mac 660AV. If I connect them with a null modem cable what are these comm
programs I would need ? And thanks.
You use two communications programs, one on the Mac, the other on the Amiga.
Start the transfer on the Amiga and start the received on the Mac, and after a
while (depending on the baud rate you select) you'll have the files transfered.
The bigger issue here is whether or not you'll be able to read those Amiga
spreadsheets into the Mac. Unless the programs you're using have a common file
format (or the ability to save and load a compatible format), you won't be able
to read it in.
