Hi, I'm using 3.1 and was just looking at my RAM disk. It reports 162K in use, but when you add up the number of bytes in use as well, these two do not quite match. I started thinking and came to the conclusion that this is caused by the fact that all the files in the RAM disk are a few hundred bytes at the most. Most of them are much smaller in fact. Of course all these files need a location to go and that way each one uses up a block, like on disks. These blocks are rather large however. I tested it using a file of exactly five bytes. When I put this on the RAM disk, its size increases by 2048 bytes! So the blocksize seems to be 2048 bytes. On disks this may be due to physical limitiations, but surely not on the RAM disk?! Why can we not set this blocksize to 128 bytes or something? In the current state the RAM disk is a real memory hog, considering the number of small files that go on it (ENV, T, CLIPS etc.). Has anyone already written a patch to decrease the RAM disks blocksize? Is anyone able to? Am I even barking up the right tree here? >F<riso Friso P.
