I just received a Federal Expressed author's copy of "3D Studio Special
Effects," and all I can say is — WOW. The book is absolutely beautiful, and
I'm proud to be a part of it.
One interesting thing I noticed: on page 109, Effect 11 is a picture of Keith
A. Seifert's "Energy Shield" effect; a picture of a laser beam impacting upon a
forcefield surrounding a spaceship. I did a double-take when I saw this: the
spaceship in the picture is mine! I built this _years_ ago at Antic Publishing
as a CAD-3D 2.0 model, and I have no idea how it got out into the public! I've
gotta call Keith and find out where he got this. It's amazing to see this model
after all these years.

What's the name of the CAD-3D ship you made? I might be able to tell you where
it's been uploaded. I think a lot of the models made by various folks
associated with Antic have drifted out over the years. BTW, we do import CAD-3D
v1 and v2 files in InterChange, and can convert them directly to 3DS files,
complete with sixteen colors. 🙂

It's been so long since I built it, I have no idea what I called it! (I no
longer have a copy of it, as I got rid of my ST 5 years ago.) It might've been
something like FIGHTER or CRUISER; it could've been something even more
imaginative, like SPACESHP. <g>
Anyway, it was pretty wild seeing this old CAD 3D model in there; like seeing
an old friend again. If I'd known that Keith was going to use it for his
example, I'd've built him something more up-to-date!

Hey, data is data! If you have any old CAD-3D objects, I'd be glad to read the
disks and convert them to 3DS for you. (I've still got Amigas here, they can
read them.) I think Antic had some freely distributable collections of CAD-3D
models as well as their specific collections. Some of these collections
mysteriously changed hands when Antic went bust, then that company changed
names, I think they were still selling / flogging 🙂 some of those models as
recently as a year ago. And certainly some of Anderson's models have shown up
in recent 3DS advertising.
Would you please let me know what the information on the book is so
that I too can order it? (i.e., ISBN Number, title, etc.?)

It is put out by New Riders Publishing, copyright 1994. (duh!)

That's right., The book is not available anywhere. Please STOP announcing
bookstore names. I have called every place you could think of. The fastest way
to get it is to call New Riders and order it. They have it in stock. But as she
put it, it will take from 7 to 10 WORKING days to get to you.

Thanks for replying, Jonas. I'm familiar with Screen-Grab. But unless I'm
overlooking the obvious, screen-grabbing doesn't really help me at all. None
of the editor display options remove hidden lines. My wooden fence models are
composed of great numbers of rectangular solids–even with Backface displayed
they look a mess in the editor.
I like to order the 3DS Special Effects book. Can you give me the

I got my copy today (Fri 14Oct94), but I ordered two weeks ago.
I am new to 3DS but not to computer manuals. This will be another
classic, (the animation intent, the method, the alternatives, and the
presentation) <it> will be studied for years.
Could it be the shortage is based on demand? Is NRP easy to
find in Indy?

This could just be a rumor, but I canceled my order and ordered it
from Digimation. Paul Boyd reported that someone from NPR told him
that they were sold out!
When I canceled my order, they told me that they would credit my
account, and if I should happen to receive the book anyway, go ahead
and keep it! I don't know about the rest of you, but if I were
waiting on this book for several weeks and someone out there got a
freebie, I'd be a little upset. Don't worry.
If I get a second, I'll post an "up-for-grabs" message here.

Of course you didn't get the book you ordered from NPR, they were trying to

If we're sold out that's news to me. However, it wouldn't surprise me. There
was such a high demand for Inside 3D Studio that we sold 12,000 books in less
than a month. I warned everyone to order early!<g> I'll see what I can find
out. If we are sold out, it's because the bookstores have now placed their
orders. The books should start showing up in the channel soon.

Here is the story, I placed a phone order on a Thursday 2 weeks ago. I was told
that I missed delivery for that day, I asked for Sat delivery and they said no
problem. On Sat, no book arrived!! I called on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and
kept getting the story that it shows being picked and should be on the way out.
Thursday Morning I called and NRP said they were out of stock and I would not
be recieving my book as scheduled. I was kinda ticked off, why did they say it
was picked (also when I placed the order they confirmed there were plenty in
stock), well anyways – I cancelled my order.
I called DIGIMATION and talked with David Avgikos, he had a book to me the next
day as promised!!!! I cant say enough about DIGIMATION, they have always taken
really good care of me in the past and are always on top of things!!!

I am responding to your post with the expectation that others will see
this:
One can stay aware of what is about to be released by simply asking ang
_good_ book store what titles are due in the next 2 to 4 to 6 months on a
subject (ie 3DS). Tomorrow I will pick up a third new 3DS book release,
scheduled for Nov '94, that I think has yet to be mentioned here. Early orders
get early delivery.

Got my book last week. Good stuff. However one critical remark. Your copy
editors need to be fed. I cannot believe the typos and misspellings. As an
example check out the conclusion paragraph on page 65..It was printed twice. I
am not really a detail person, but when you spend $50 for a book, it is a bit
of a bummer to see so many errors.
Also my CD did not contain Keith Seifert's SHLDSRCE.TXT file. I am really
interested in seeing what IPAS source code looks like.
Good book. You need a followup one on IPAS stuff. Might even think about doing
a VHS tape to go along with it. Kinda like David's.
